In Saint-Just-Saint-Rambert, you can plan your stay around the Loire, opportunities to observe nature or the history of the area. Two trails differ considerably in length and walking time; there are also activities on the water and several cultural attractions.

Walks of different lengths

The 5 km Chemin des Castors starts at the Boule des Barques on the Saint-Rambert side. The circular route is listed as taking about 1 hour and 15 minutes to walk. It passes through the riparian woodland, over the large Pascal-Clément Bridge and across the meadows of the Saint-Just district on the way back. Check that trail conditions are normal before setting off.

Along the Chemin des Castors, you can often spot signs of the European beaver, which is found on both sides of the river. Wildlife sightings are seasonal and not guaranteed. The trail therefore combines a specific circular route with the chance to notice signs of this river-dwelling animal.

At 3.1 km and about 45 minutes on foot, the Chemin des Libellules is the shorter of the two routes described. It starts on the right bank at the Base de loisirs, passes the Verrerie de Saint-Just, goes through the centre of Asnières and returns via the glassworks district. Here, too, it is advisable to check that trail conditions are normal before setting off. Several dragonfly species live along the route, including the rare Sombre Darter (Sympetrum depressiusculum); sightings are not guaranteed.

The distances and approximate walking times provide a practical comparison for planning your day: the Chemin des Libellules covers less ground and takes less time, while the Chemin des Castors runs longer through riparian woodland and meadows.

Activities and discoveries along the Loire

The BASE DE LOISIRS LOIRE FOREZ offers canoeing and kayaking on the Loire in Saint-Just-Saint-Rambert. Canoes are available to rent in summer; club activities run year-round. The Chemin des Libellules starts at this leisure centre. This means you can combine the walking option with the water activities offered there, without having to follow a fixed itinerary.

The leisure centre also offers outdoor activities such as archery, laser activities, orienteering and roller sports by reservation. These activities are for groups and individuals, but depend on reservations and the operator’s availability. If you would like to plan any of these activities, be sure to take the reservation requirements into account in advance.

The Maison Départementale de la Pêche et de la Nature explores the Loire’s aquatic habitats in a museum and immersive space. Its offerings include an Explor’Game, a guided walk, aquariums and a small shop selling regional products. As programmes and facilities may change, it is worth checking what is currently available before your visit.

Medieval Saint-Rambert and heritage

Sur les pas de Jehan is a free, self-guided historical tour through the medieval centre of Saint-Rambert, available year-round. Eight information panels are mounted on walls, and three ground-level panels are located on public paths. The route takes you through the town, with its double line of fortifications, Romanesque church, half-timbered houses, late-medieval manor houses and 19th-century buildings decorated with brickwork.

The Musée des Civilisations Daniel Pouget is housed in a former priory in Saint-Rambert, converted into a pleasure residence in the 18th and 19th centuries. Its collections cover archaeology, modern and contemporary art, fine arts, history, technology and industry, ethnology, and themes relating to Africa, the Americas, Asia and Oceania. Individual exhibits may change.

The GR® de Pays Rails et rambertes also offers a glimpse of local heritage: the Loire rambertes, their construction from fir wood from the Monts du Forez, and the railway transport of potatoes, paving stones and timber. These themes connect the history of navigation on the Loire with the processing and transport of goods. For a stay focused on culture, you can choose between the tour of the medieval centre, the museum and industrial history.

Practical information for your stay

If you are travelling by motorhome, there is a year-round motorhome stopover on the Chemin des Danses. It provides water and electricity, as well as a wastewater disposal point; parking is free. As operating details may change, it is advisable to check them before travelling there.
