The Réserve de Biterne brings ponds and birdwatching into focus, while the parish church and Domaine de Beauvoir add historic architecture to Arthun. If you are looking for a holiday rental for a stay in Arthun, you can first decide whether nature or heritage should be the main focus.

Ponds and birdwatching

Founded in 1987, the Réserve de Biterne covers 38 hectares. Three ponds lie in a landscape of meadows and bocage; the area is an ornithological reserve in Arthun. Migratory birds use it as a refuge along their route between northern and southern Europe. Its connection with nature therefore ranges from the specific habitat around the ponds to the wider context of bird migration.

A free, easy out-and-back walk of less than two kilometres offers three observation points overlooking the ponds and wild waterfowl.

A visitor experience at the Maison des étangs

The Maison des étangs du Forez offers a visitor experience of its own. It opened in 2012 in a renovated former rammed-earth farmhouse. A one-hour self-guided investigation puts visitors in the role of a journalist and takes them through six themed areas, including an observatory. For individual visitors, access to the exhibition and/or the observatory upstairs is free.

The experiences differ in how you explore: outdoors, a short walk with observation points; at the Maison, a one-hour self-guided investigation through six areas. This lets you choose between observing nature along the route and a visit with a defined duration.

Church and architectural history

The parish church of Notre-Dame, later Saint-Barthélemy, appears among the possessions of Cluny in 981–982. The present chancel bay may date from the 11th century. These dates mark different historical reference points: the early association with Cluny and a possible construction phase for the chancel bay. The polychrome—that is, multicoloured—paintwork imitates ashlar masonry on the walls; the archivolts feature foliage with ears of grain and grapes, as well as lily motifs, while billet moulding decorates the arch faces. The painted articulation of the walls is thus paired with botanical and geometric details on the arches.

Domaine de Beauvoir

The Domaine de Beauvoir has been protected as a historic monument through listings dated 4 September 1990 and 4 July 2007. Around 1780, a 16th-century house was replaced by a château in the Louis XVI style, built by the Italian architect Pietro Antonio Gabbio. The Château de Beauvoir is privately owned and not open to the public.

The Way of St James through Arthun

The GR 765 Way of St James between Cluny and Le Puy-en-Velay passes through Arthun. Those interested in pilgrimage routes can take this specific connection to the village into account alongside the nature and heritage themes when planning their trip.
