Vénérieu brings together a swimming lake, weekly market and rural heritage. When choosing a holiday rental for a stay in the village, you can focus on swimming and fishing, a Thursday morning at the market, or historic architectural features. The village’s history stretches from the parish church, first mentioned in 1172, to fortified houses from the 15th and late 16th centuries; the stone-slab features on farmsteads also have their own local name.

Swimming Lake: Swimming and Fishing

Lac de Vénérieu is an artificial lake covering 30 hectares. Its sandy beach, which covers 8 hectares, is suitable for swimming. At Lac de baignade de Vénérieu, there is a sandy beach with a supervised swimming area of 3,000 m². These figures refer to different areas: 30 hectares describes the lake, 8 hectares the beach and 3,000 m² the supervised swimming area. This distinction makes the figures comparable without treating the lake, beach and swimming area as the same area.

Fishing is possible at Lac de Vénérieu year-round; access to the lake is available during the day from 07:00 to 20:00. Year-round refers to the possibility of fishing, while the times describe the daily access window. Check the access conditions before your visit. If you are weighing up swimming and fishing, this distinction can help: for fishing, the time of year and access hours matter; for swimming, the designated areas are the main consideration.

Thursday Market

The Marché de Vénérieu takes place on Thursday mornings from 08:00 to 12:00 on Route de Moras. It features a butcher, a market gardener and a cheese seller. Thursday morning gives the market a different role in planning than the lake: fishing is possible year-round, whereas a market visit depends on a fixed day of the week. The three vendors represent different food categories: meat, vegetables and cheese.

Church and Fortified Houses

The Saint-Agnan parish church in the hamlet of La Rivoire in Vénérieu has been mentioned since 1172 and was partially rebuilt in the 18th century. The two dates link a medieval mention with a later structural change. A mission cross stands near the church, adding another religious landmark to the historical sites.

Two privately owned fortified houses mark different periods. The house at Rocheville dates from the 15th century. The house at Beauvillard dates from the late 16th century and has an elongated main building with a square stair tower. In terms of age, Rocheville is older; Beauvillard’s later date is accompanied by two specific architectural features.

Stone-slab features known as “pâlis” can be found along the farmsteads in Vénérieu and are considered a characteristic part of the area’s rural heritage. Here, the focus is different from that of the fortified houses: a named stone feature along the farmsteads. The term “pâlis” gives this detail its own place in the village’s history, alongside the dated buildings.
