Saint-Paul-Dʼizeaux offers visitors a range of options for culture, hiking and cycling. The Church of the Conversion of Saint Paul reflects several historical periods; routes lead to Col de Chatain and Camp de César. The “Around Tullins” cycling route, at 81 kilometres and around six hours, offers a very different timeframe and level of physical challenge. For planning purposes, it is therefore worth distinguishing between a heritage-focused visit, an easy hike and a demanding cycling route intended for experienced or advanced cyclists.

Church and Local History

The Church of the Conversion of Saint Paul has a Romanesque choir with frescoes dating from the 17th century. More precisely, the frescoes date from 1680 to 1690. The Romanesque designation describes the choir, while the date of the frescoes places the later decoration in a specific period; the same church thus brings together two historical features. The “Patrimoine en Isère” label recognizes the quality of its heritage as a building of departmental significance. The site of the former Cistercian priory of Bellecombe is also located in Saint-Paul-Dʼizeaux. The church and former priory site therefore offer different historical connections to the area: the church is notable for its architectural style and dated frescoes, while Bellecombe is associated with its former status as a priory.

Hiking and Routes in the Countryside

The hike to Col de Chatain from Saint-Paul-Dʼizeaux is an easy half-loop through a chestnut forest. A route description updated in March 2023 gives a distance of 8.72 kilometres and a duration of 3 hours 20 minutes. The path is part of the “In the Footsteps of Mandrin” circuit; one stopping point is between Saint-Paul and La Tuilière. Since trail conditions and local signage can change, check both before setting out.

Another route leads to Camp de César. It crosses the meadows of the locality known as “Le Retour” before reaching its destination. Unlike the hike to Col de Chatain, which passes through a chestnut forest, this route’s distinctive landscape feature is its stretch across the meadows.

The “Around Tullins” Cycling Route

The “Around Tullins” cycling route is 81.0 kilometres long and takes about six hours; it is intended for experienced or advanced cyclists. The route heads towards Saint-Paul-Dʼizeaux via Col de Parménie. Route details may change when updated, so check them before setting out. Compared with the easy hike to Col de Chatain, the difference in time and level of challenge is clear: 8.72 kilometres and 3 hours 20 minutes on foot, compared with around 81 kilometres and about six hours by bike.
