Saint-Baudille-et-Pipet brings together architectural history and a clearly defined focus on mountains and outdoor activities. Alongside its historic buildings are the Refuge de Rochassac, at the foot of the Obiou peaks, and paragliding lessons at the Site de vol libre de Courtet. Its varied highlights range from architecture and literature to an alpine setting and a specific activity for beginners.

Castles, Church and Chapels

The Château de Montmeilleur is a fortified manor house whose construction phases span the 16th to the 19th centuries. Its façades and roofs were partially protected as a Monument historique by decree on 31 December 1979. This protection applies to parts of the building, not to the entire château as a whole. The château was also the setting for numerous scenes in Jean Giono’s novel “Un roi sans divertissement”. Architectural history spanning several centuries and a literary connection thus come together in one building; the dates point to several phases rather than a single year of construction.

Two different dates come together at the Église Saint Pancrasse, Saint Baudille, Saint Adon et Saint Cerès: the church was built in 1889 and has a bell dating from 1740. The bell is therefore older than the church building. The Chapelle de la Nativité de la Vierge was built at the beginning of the 17th century in the hamlet of the same name and has survived to this day. Its classical appearance includes a bell tower above the entrance; it also has a marble altar. At the church, the focus is on the different dates of the building and the bell; at the chapel, it is on the combination of its construction period and specific architectural features.

The Château féodal de Pipet reflects a different kind of change: it has now been converted into a farm. A small trefoil window is all that remains of its earlier structure. Both its agricultural use and this surviving architectural feature are part of how it is understood today. This sets Pipet apart from the other historic buildings: here, its changed use sits alongside a single surviving trace of its former architecture.

The Maison Périer also brings together family history and architectural change. It is the birthplace of a distinguished family that produced two French ministers and a president of the Republic. The estate, with its large courtyard, still stands, but has been extensively altered and no longer belongs to the family. Its history therefore has two sides: the family’s political significance and the changed appearance of the surviving estate. The large courtyard is one of the property’s defining features, while the changes are equally important to understanding it today.

Mountain Scenery and Paragliding Lessons

The Refuge de Rochassac stands on alpine pasture at the foot of the Obiou peaks and is managed by a volunteer association. This combination of a precise location and volunteer management gives the refuge a different character from the historic buildings in the village: the focus here is on its alpine setting and how it is managed.

AéroSAT offers paragliding lessons for beginners at the Site de vol libre de Courtet in Saint-Baudille-et-Pipet. The site can be reached from Mens in the direction of Tréminis. If you want to include lessons in your travel plans, confirm availability before setting off. For directions, follow the route from Mens towards Tréminis. Unlike the Refuge de Rochassac, Courtet is defined above all by its lessons and the route from Mens.
