Saint-Étienne-De-Crossey brings together a range of travel interests: climbing in the Gorges de Crossey, a guided Via corda, a cycling tour through wooded hills and historic sites. You can plan your stay around what you most want to explore—sporting activities, architecture or local history.

Climbing: routes, access and Via corda

The Site d'escalade des Gorges de Crossey climbing area has 208 routes, graded from 3 to 7c. Most are graded 5 or 6. In addition to the broad range from the lowest to the highest grade, this distribution is a useful guide when assessing the routes in relation to your own climbing experience. The area is suitable for beginners and for developing your climbing skills.

From Voiron, the climbing area can be reached via the D520 towards Saint-Laurent-du-Pont. About 1 km after Saint-Étienne-De-Crossey, the access to the gorges begins; you can park in one of the roadside parking areas. The approach walk takes 5 to 12 minutes.

Another kind of climbing experience is the Via corda de Crossey: a guided, protected activity through rock bands and cliffs, with climbing sections. Routes with stated grades and a guided activity are different ways to plan a climbing-themed stay.

Church, pilgrimage and milling history

The Église Saint-Etienne is a parish church in the centre of Saint-Étienne-De-Crossey. Its single-nave plan is shaped like a Latin cross, and its Neoclassical façade is characteristic of the mid-19th century. These distinctive architectural features give the church a particular place in the history of the town.

The chapel of Château de Tolvon was dedicated to Saint Denis in the 13th century, and a pilgrimage developed there. The historic mill at Étang Dauphin offers another perspective on the past: it was used to produce flour between the 18th and 20th centuries. Millstones and a pise, a rammed-earth construction technique, attest to this use. The church, chapel and mill thus represent different historical themes—architecture, pilgrimage and flour production.

Cycling tour and local produce

The Tour de Baracuchet cycling tour starts at the Gymnase in Saint-Étienne-De-Crossey, heads towards Tolvon and then continues through wooded hills. Its stated route gives the tour a clear direction and a distinctive landscape. It offers an activity option different from the climbing routes and the guided Via corda.

La poule aux fruits d'or sells certified organic fruit jams, compotes, sorbets, syrups and coulis in Saint-Étienne-De-Crossey, as well as eggs, various types of bread and brioche. The selection spans several kinds of products, from fruit spreads and sweet treats to baked goods and eggs. Individual products may vary, so check what is available before your visit.

Plan your stay around your interests

When looking for a holiday rental, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on: climbing routes with stated grades, the guided Via corda, the cycling tour or the historical and cultural sites. These options differ in both form and theme.
