Besse’s appeal lies in the interplay between its distinctive mountain architecture and the different ways to explore its local heritage: you can learn about pastoralism at the museum, follow a self-guided QR-code tour or plan an interactive circular walk starting from the village. This makes it possible to discover the destination according to your interests—through exhibitions and architectural history, digital interpretation along the way or landscape views.

Mountain architecture and local history

The houses of Besse-en-Oisans are built with stone from Oisans and wood. This has given rise to distinctive, well-preserved local mountain architecture. Besse-en-Oisans is also designated a “site patrimonial remarquable” (remarkable heritage site)—another facet of the village’s cultural character.

The commune’s heritage includes numerous wayside shrines, chapels and crosses. Residents built them mainly in the 19th century. Their origins are connected to the difficult living conditions of the time, shaped by climatic risks and epidemics, particularly the plague. These structures therefore tell not only of religious practice, but also of the challenges that shaped life in the area.

Museum and walks in Besse

The Maison des Alpages in Besse-en-Oisans houses a museum, a screening room and exhibitions about pastoralism. It offers a concise introduction to a subject connected to the local mountain heritage. Visitors who want to explore Besse’s architectural and human heritage independently can take interactive walks using a smartphone, a guide booklet and QR codes. The stops provide audiovisual information.

Guided village tours are also available, but by request only. If you would like to include a guided tour in your plans, contact the Maison des Alpages for current arrangements. This gives you two different ways to explore the village: a self-guided walk or a requested guided tour.

Interactive routes and landscapes

Pierre Blanche is a 4.6-kilometre interactive circular walk starting from Besse. QR-code stations and a smartphone game introduce local heritage, the environment and geography. The route is open seasonally from May to October. Its stated distance and digital interpretation give it a different focus from the Sentier des Oratoires (grande boucle).

The latter passes through the alpine pastures of Besse-en-Oisans, offers a panorama of the Grandes Rousses and then leads to the hamlet of Sert. Access depends on snow and weather conditions. You can choose between these routes based on their described features: Pierre Blanche combines a specified distance with digital information, while the Sentier des Oratoires focuses on alpine pastures, panoramic views and the hamlet of Sert.

Landscape landmarks and planning your visit

Besse-en-Oisans is part of the membership area of Parc national des Écrins. The Plateau d’Emparis is associated with Besse, lies at an altitude of 2,300 metres and is classified as a Natura 2000 site. These details add two specific landscape landmarks to the picture of the village’s architecture and heritage: its connection to the national park’s membership area and the high-altitude plateau.

The Vallée du Ferrand tourist office is located in Besse. It is open to the public from mid-June to mid-September and provides visitors with information and assistance. If you plan to use it for orientation, keep its seasonal opening period in mind. You should also take snow and weather conditions into account when planning the Sentier des Oratoires; Pierre Blanche, meanwhile, is seasonally accessible from May to October.
