Six signposted hiking trails, covering a total of more than 30 kilometres, give Claix a clear connection to nature. There is also a high-altitude peat bog at the foot of the Vercors cliffs and buildings from various periods. This gives you different options when planning your visit: trails and landscapes, nature watching, or history and culture.
Hiking Trails and Nature in the Vercors
Each of the six hiking trails has its own information sheet with details about the route and its features. If you are comparing trails, this information provides a practical starting point for choosing one. The signposted network covers more than 30 kilometres in total; the individual information sheets help you distinguish between the routes described.
The Tourbière du Peuil lies at an altitude of 970 metres at the foot of the Vercors cliffs. It is one of the Vercors massif’s rare wetlands and one of the last high-altitude peat bogs in the Isère département with sphagnum moss. More than 200 flower species can be observed there. Wildlife mentioned includes bullfinches, common frogs, palmate newts and ruddy darters. The peat bog therefore offers a distinct nature-focused experience alongside the signposted hiking trails.
The landscape also defines the Colline de Comboire, which features dry grasslands rich in orchids and limestone cliffs that are 150 metres high and stretch for 1.6 kilometres. The cliffs provide nesting sites for eagle owls and peregrine falcons. The term “Vercors” does not refer indiscriminately to the entire municipal area: since the summer of 2008, the part of Claix between the Vercors cliffs and the Chemin de l’Abbé at Malhivert has been part of the Parc naturel régional du Vercors.
Building History Across Different Periods
Fort de Comboire was built between 1882 and 1884. It was the last fort constructed in Grenoble’s defensive belt and is considered the best-preserved fort in it. The Chapelle Saint-Jean has a much older historical connection: the former parish church is documented as a possession of the Cluniac monastery of Domène as early as 1085. Its Gothic choir preserves recently restored 17th-century paintings.
The ownership history of Château Delphinal first leads to the de Claix family, known since 1108, and later to the Dauphins. Today, what remains is the keep with a half-oculus from the former chapel, as well as part of the medieval castle enclosure. These details offer a different historical perspective from the fort or the former parish church: here, the focus is on the surviving parts of a medieval castle complex.
The Vieux Pont de Claix sur le Drac is located in the municipality of Claix. Jehan Albert and Pierre Salomon built it between 1608 and 1610 under the administration of the Duke of Lesdiguières. The arch has a span of 46 metres; the bridge was designated a historic monument on 27 May 1898. The restored Vieux Pont Lesdiguières is named separately and has been illuminated at night since 12 July 2010.
Culture and Getting Around
Le Déclic is a small performance venue with a capacity of 168 seated or 350 standing. Its stage programme is aimed at all age groups, from children to adults, and focuses on discovery and openness to the world. Since the programme is seasonal, it is a good idea to check what is on during your chosen travel dates.
The Médiathèque Municipale Georges Brassens welcomes visitors throughout the year. Its offerings include reading clubs, author visits, storytelling sessions and exhibitions. Activities and opening hours may change; if you are planning to visit on a specific date, check the current programme.
For a bike ride, the Véloroute 64 is another option. Since opening in 2020, it has followed the right bank of the Drac from the Comboire area to the Pont Lesdiguières in Claix. Since route conditions can change, it is worth checking the latest information before setting out. Hiking, cycling, nature watching and cultural events are different options; which ones are most important for your stay depends on your interests and the seasonal programme.
