Viuz-la-Chiésaz combines a distinctive village setting with hiking options on the Semnoz: the village is laid out around its church, while the Station du Semnoz offers three marked hiking trails that are free to access. Other highlights include the scenic Circuit des Trois Lacs, farm-based produce and a varied programme of activities organised by local associations. This makes it easy to plan a stay around your own interests, from local history and scenery to traditional crafts.
Village setting and church
The village of Viuz-la-Chiésaz consists mainly of farmhouses built in a row. Today, these former farm buildings are used as detached or attached houses. Together with the church, around which the village is laid out, they shape the village’s structure. If you are interested in how a village has developed, you will find two distinct points of reference here: the arrangement of the farmhouses and a church building with a clearly recorded completion date.
The present-day Church of Saint-Étienne was completed at the end of 1903. This date provides a historical reference for the church; the former use of the farm buildings as farmhouses tells another part of the story of the village setting. Alongside trails and scenery, Viuz-la-Chiésaz therefore offers a focus on cultural history that you can explore right in the village.
Hiking on the Semnoz
At the Station du Semnoz, you can choose from three marked hiking trails that are free to access. Local conditions may affect access, so check before setting out. Another named route is the Circuit des Trois Lacs. It is easy to access and has only modest changes in elevation.
The Circuit’s main attractions are its scenery and views: it offers a 360-degree panorama, with views of Mont Blanc, La Tournette, the Aravis and the Bauges. It also gives you the chance to discover the Semnoz mountain pastures in an alpine setting. Several specific features help you assess the Circuit, from its elevation profile to the named viewpoints.
The GR® des Grands Lacs also passes through Viuz-la-Chiésaz and crosses the Semnoz. The trails differ in the details that matter when choosing a route: the Station trails are defined by their number, markings and free access; the Circuit by its panorama, mountain pastures and elevation changes; and the GR® by its route through the village and across the Semnoz.
Agriculture, bread and activities
Viuz-la-Chiésaz has a production profile shaped by agriculture. This includes milk, cheese, meat and grain. The “Fournil des Éparis” offers a connection to the traditional craft of working with grain: Paul Rocher runs workshops on making and baking sourdough bread using flour from locally grown heritage varieties. If you would like to attend a workshop, check in advance whether one is scheduled for your travel dates.
Viuz Animation Loisirs offers sports, cultural, artistic, personal development and wellness activities. Events are also held throughout the year. The specific activities on offer may change. These areas cater to a range of interests, from exercise and culture to art and wellbeing, while the events add to the association’s programme throughout the year.
Plan your stay around your interests
To plan your stay, you can first decide which aspect interests you most: the village setting around the church, the different hiking features on the Semnoz, or agriculture and traditional breadmaking. This gives local history, scenery and the local programme their own place in your plans, without imposing a set order for your stay.
