Jonzier-Épagny offers tangible starting points for an exploration: hiking trails with different distances and stated durations, historic buildings and views from the hills above Vigny. When planning, it is worth considering the trail length and stated duration together. Churches, a grotto and the market each provide their own local highlights.
Hiking trails by duration and theme
The Sentier Nature du Vuache starts in the hamlet of Épagny, at an altitude of 615 m, in the municipality of Jonzier. Tourism information updated on 9 July 2024 lists two hiking options: three hours over 7.5 kilometres or four hours over 9.5 kilometres. The difference is therefore one hour and two kilometres. For planning, both figures can be weighed together; distance alone does not fully describe the difference.
The marked “Paysages et récoltes” hiking route offers a different basis for planning: it is 8.9 km long, has a positive elevation gain of 215 m and is listed as taking 2 hours and 10 minutes. The route is considered easy and passes through Chênex, Jonzier-Épagny, Vers and Viry. Its natural and rural heritage includes Bois du Mont, Bois aux Reynauds, old farmhouses, agricultural landscapes and traditional orchards. At 8.9 km, the route falls between the two Sentier Nature options, while its stated duration is shorter than either. This comparison shows why distance and duration can be considered separately.
The Sentier des Morennes is a circular trail through Jonzier-Épagny that offers a chance to discover the area’s built and natural heritage. If this theme is a priority when choosing a hike, the circular route provides a distinct, clearly defined focus alongside the distance and duration figures for the other routes.
Views and scenery
From the hills above Vigny, the orientation table at Les Longues Reisses offers views of the Mont Blanc range, the Aravis and the Genevois plain. These specific landmarks complement the distance details for the hiking trails. When comparing options, you can assess the routes by length, duration and theme, and consider the viewpoint as a distinct scenic highlight.
Churches and local history
The Church of Saint Maurice in Jonzier is Neoclassical and was built in the 19th century. The former church in Épagny now looks like a farmhouse. It preserves a granite holy-water font, a religious beam bearing the date 1641, and a wooden statue of Saint Sebastian that is several centuries old. Together, these places reveal different aspects of local architectural and religious history: a 19th-century church and surviving evidence of the former ecclesiastical use of the site.
In Vigny, residents built a Marian grotto during the Second World War to give thanks that the hamlet had been spared from fires. The grotto commemorates this event; the furnishings of the former church in Épagny offer a different way to explore the area’s history. Alongside the architecture, the focus is therefore also on the reasons for and objects of religious commemoration.
Market and visits by appointment
A market featuring local producers takes place in Jonzier-Épagny every Thursday from 4 p.m. If market day fits your trip, the regular weekday schedule provides a practical planning reference. Check the date before your visit so you can plan your time there accordingly.
Les Cuirs du Vuache welcomes visitors by appointment during the day on weekdays and on Saturday mornings from 10 a.m. Arrange your visit in advance. The market and visits by appointment therefore also differ in how they need to be planned: Thursday is the key day for the market, while visits to Les Cuirs du Vuache must be arranged beforehand.
