Thônes offers several ways to explore culture and get active: the Circuit du Patrimoine takes you through the historic and architectural heritage of the town center, while the Musée Patrimonial covers a broad range of subjects, from geology to religious art. There are also themes relating to forests, woodworking and Reblochon, as well as routes with different characteristics. You can therefore start planning your trip with a specific question: would you most like to explore town history, delve into crafts, or make time for a walk or a hike?

Town History and Museum Themes

The Circuit du Patrimoine de Thônes takes you through the historic and architectural heritage of the town center, passing important sites around the town. Each stop features explanatory text to enhance your visit. The Musée Patrimonial du Pays de Thônes – Fondateurs: François et Lucien Cochat covers geology, local wildlife, prehistory, history, folk traditions and religious art. This makes a difference when choosing what to focus on: the circuit draws attention to the sites and architectural heritage of the center, while the museum covers several fields of knowledge. If you are particularly interested in architecture and local history, the walking tour offers a different perspective from the museum’s broad range of subjects.

Forests, Woodworking and Cheese

The Ecomusée du Bois et de la Forêt introduces visitors to the world of forests and woodworking in the mountains, from the past to the present. It offers a lively, interactive visit with sawmilling demonstrations. The Ecomusée also gives visitors the chance to see a 19th-century water-powered sawmill. This time span links historical and contemporary perspectives on forests and woodworking, while the demonstrations make sawing itself part of the visit.

At Le Farto, both the cheese and its history take center stage. In Thônes, Le Farto sells Reblochon fermier AOP directly to the public. The visitor program includes tours of the aging cellars for Reblochon Fermier AOP and Savoy cheeses, followed by tastings. Le Farto also tells the story of how Reblochon Fermier AOP originated in the Aravis Valley. As of August 22, 2026, tours had been suspended because of work. If you are planning a tour or tasting, check before you travel whether they are being offered again. Details about direct sales opening hours may also change, so check them in advance.

Hike, Walk or Via Ferrata

The Sentier du Pont Romain is a family-friendly hike that starts in Thônes. The Promenade Aimé Constantin, on the other hand, is a short walk in the town center that you can take with family or friends. The two options therefore differ in their described format: one is a hike starting in Thônes, the other a short walk in the center. If you are looking for a short route in the town center, the Promenade fits the plan; for a hike suitable for families, consider the Sentier du Pont Romain.

The Via ferrata of Thônes is close to the town center and adds another activity to the options. It can be completed independently or with supervision. If you are planning this activity, check the current participation requirements before your visit, as they may be updated. How you take part is a separate planning consideration, distinguishing the via ferrata from both the walk and the hike.
