Chapels, hiking trails and mountain nature give Mieussy several very different sides. When planning your trip, you can choose between religious heritage, trails with changing landscapes and natural attractions—without making every outing about the same theme.
Chapels and local history
The Chapelle Saint Denis is Mieussy’s oldest chapel; its construction dates back to the 15th century. It is dedicated to Saint Denis and Saint Christopher. The Chapelle Saint Grat dates from 1697 and is dedicated to the Holy Family and Saint Grat. It is considered a place of protection for crops. The surviving architecture and the many chapels are part of the local heritage and are of interest to visitors.
The Circuit des Chapelles is a loop trail that leads to this religious heritage. It starts at the Chapelle Notre Dame, opposite the Fruitière des Hauts-Fleury, and ends at the Chapelle Saint Denis. If you would like to combine a visit to a single chapel with a walk, the trail to the Chapelle Saint Grat offers another option: this easy hike runs between the village and the forest to a peaceful viewpoint overlooked by the chapel.
The Grotte du Jourdy is also connected to local history: during the Reign of Terror from 1792 to 1796, it served as a hiding place for the vicars of Mieussy. Another historical trace leads to the summit of Pertuiset. In June 1978, the first documented paragliding takeoff from Mieussy took place there, by Jean-Claude Bétemps, André Bohn and Gérard Bosson.
Hiking trails with different landscapes
The Hameaux de Leÿ et Messy hike starts at the Viaduc in Mieussy and passes through rural hamlets. At Messy, views open up towards Mont Blanc, Pointe d’Orchez and Le Môle. The Boucle du coteau sud also starts in Mieussy, but takes you through woodland, pastures and villages. Along the way, it offers views of the Giffre Valley and Mont Blanc. The trails described therefore differ both in their landscapes and in the viewpoints mentioned.
Another loop is the Tour du Mont Mailly, a forest circuit starting from Dessy on the left bank of the Giffre. The route offers views of Mieussy’s southern slope and the Pertuiset takeoff site, and passes Savoyard farmhouses and the remarkable Ivoray marsh. For the return journey, there is an option via the Pont du Diable on the Giffre.
For a different kind of route, there is the walk from the Viaduc to Dessy. It follows a paved road and is accessible to strollers and wheelchairs. This means that alongside the hikes described, there is also a route with explicitly stated accessibility and an easy hike to the Chapelle Saint Grat.
Natural attractions and activities
Lac d’Anthon is a small, peaceful mountain lake in Mieussy, rich in fish. Fishing is permitted with a fishing license. Those interested in alpine nature will find the Sommand peat bog a rewarding destination, with its especially abundant alpine flora and fauna.
Mieussy is also a stop on the Route des Grandes Alpes. In winter, the ski area of Sommand is accessible from Mieussy. This seasonal option adds another focus to trip planning, alongside the trails, chapels and natural attractions.
Cheese and regional products
The Fruitière in Mieussy currently sells cheese and regional products in a temporary shop on Rue des Écoles. Since this is a provisional sales outlet, it is best to check before your trip whether this arrangement is still in place.
