Servoz brings together historic hamlets, alpine scenery and insights into mountain farming. When planning your visit, you can choose from a range of highlights: views of striking mountain ranges, the Gorges de la Diosaz, Lac Vert or exhibitions about regional agriculture. Consider whether you would like to focus your stay mainly on outdoor activities or combine it with local history and culture.
Historic hamlets and mountain views
Servoz has preserved the historic character of its hamlets. These include Vieux Servoz, Le Mont and Le Bouchet. Together, they give the village several distinct points of reference rather than reducing it to a single center. The Servoz basin lies in an open landscape with plenty of sunshine. The Chaîne des Fiz rises behind it, while views extend to the Massif du Mont-Blanc and, in the distance, the Chaîne des Aravis and Pointe Percée.
The village landscape thus brings historic hamlets together with a sweeping mountain backdrop. If you would like to explore Servoz, you can first focus on its settlements or make the landscape and its named viewpoints the main focus. The descriptions distinguish between nearby mountain scenery and the Chaîne des Aravis and Pointe Percée, which are explicitly described as lying in the distance.
Hiking and the Gorges de la Diosaz
Servoz offers opportunities for hiking and mountain biking, whether for a sporting outing or a leisurely excursion. The Gorges de la Diosaz offer a specific hiking experience: you can visit the gorge via a shaded path along the rock faces and sturdy footbridges over the mountain stream. On a walk, you can discover the five waterfalls of the Diosaz and reach the heart of the canyon.
This visit differs from an outing focused primarily on mountain views: in the Gorges, the rock faces, flowing water and waterfalls shape the experience. The described path leads through the gorge; no information about its duration or difficulty is provided. Hiking and mountain biking also offer options for more sporting or more leisurely pursuits.
Mountain farming and local history
The Maison du Lieutenant is the oldest house in the Chamonix-Mont-Blanc Valley. It is also an interpretation center for mountain farming, its environment, its products and its know-how. The permanent exhibition “L’agriculture de montagne, Coeur du territoire” is on display there.
The Maison de l’Alpage focuses on a different subject: as an information center, it is dedicated to mountain pastures and agropastoralism. Its permanent exhibition is titled “Agriculture et paysages, les grandes mutations”. Together, the two centers offer different perspectives on agricultural topics: one focuses on mountain farming and its surroundings, while the other explores mountain pastures and agropastoralism. Their exhibition titles highlight these distinct perspectives.
The church of Servoz is also part of the village’s history. In 1537, it became the parish church for Servoz and six neighboring hamlets. It is dedicated to Saint Loup. The local history thus spans the development of the parish community as well as mountain farming, the focus of the two exhibition centers.
Lac Vert and traveling by train
Lac Vert is a glacial lake at an elevation of 1,270 meters. Its water takes on an emerald-green color because of microscopic algae and reflections of the surrounding forest. A forest path leads to the lake from the hamlet of La CĂ´te, in the heights above Servoz. Lac Vert can therefore be considered a destination in its own right: the path starts in La CĂ´te and leads through the forest to a lake whose striking color is explained by the natural causes described above.
Unlike the Gorges de la Diosaz, the focus here is on a forest path and a high-altitude glacial lake; in the gorge, it is the rock faces, footbridges and five waterfalls. This distinction can help you choose between two different nature experiences, without implying a shared route or a specific duration.
The SNCF rail line serves the village of Servoz from Saint-Gervais-les-Bains–Le Fayet; TER and TGV connections are possible. Check the timetable for your specific journey. This lets you coordinate your choice of connection with your planned stay.
