Menthon-Saint-Bernard combines architectural history with a publicly accessible lakeside and several waterside activities. The Château, Saint-Bernard Church and the walking trail through the hamlets offer different cultural perspectives; along the shore, walks and lake activities take centre stage. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between guided visits, seasonal lessons and the various rental options.

Château and architectural history

The Château de Menthon stands on a rocky promontory and offers views of the lake and the surrounding landscape. It is open for guided tours from 5 April to 27 October. Since visiting arrangements may change, check the current dates before planning your visit to the château. The château’s long history also includes continuity of ownership within the same family: it has been inhabited by the same family for almost 1,000 years.

Another perspective is offered by the “Château de Menthon-St-Bernard par les hameaux” walking trail. It passes through the hamlets of Ramponnet and Les Moulins and by the château. The route is accessible on foot or by mountain bike all year round, weather and trail conditions permitting. The options therefore differ in terms of planning: guided tours are limited to the period from 5 April to 27 October, while the route is accessible year-round in suitable conditions.

Saint-Bernard Church also bears traces of several construction phases. It was built in 1846–1847 on the remains of a Romanesque church. The building includes a 13th-century bell tower base and a 15th-century count’s chapel. The church thus brings together 19th-century construction and two older, dated features.

Lakeside and water activities

The one-kilometre stretch of publicly accessible lakeshore is used for walks and lake activities such as visiting the beach, sailing, diving and boat rental. The bay of Menthon-Saint-Bernard is next to the Roc de Chère nature reserve. This means that, alongside architectural history, the landscape and activities on the water offer distinct ways to spend your stay.

At Menthon-Saint-Bernard beach, the swimming school offers 30-minute individual or group lessons in the mornings from June to September. The lessons are for children aged three and over and also help improve swimming skills. If you plan to take part, check the current dates before your visit.

Delphis plongée, at the Menthon-Saint-Bernard watersports centre, offers introductory dives and training for all levels. This differs from swimming lessons in its focus on diving and its training format. Since the availability of activities may change, it is advisable to check the latest information before making plans.

The Cercle Nautique du Lanfonnet offers recreational sailing with catamarans and single- or crewed dinghies; the provider also rents kayaks and stand-up paddleboards. At Port de Menthon, Le Bounty rents boats and pedal boats. When choosing between water activities, you can therefore consider sailing, paddling, diving, lessons and boat rental as distinct options. For swimming lessons and rentals, the practical planning question is whether the seasonal dates or current availability suit your plans.
