Faverges brings together Gallo-Roman traces, medieval heritage and routes exploring a range of landscapes and cultural themes. This offers several points of focus for planning a visit: archaeological history, a guided tour, collections or independent routes.

Gallo-Roman Traces and City History

The Thovey archaeological site is located in the centre of present-day Faverges. Excavations there uncovered a peristyle, a thermal complex and buildings dating from the 1st century BC to the 3rd century AD. The Musée Archéologique de Viuz-Faverges adds to this picture of the past: its three galleries are devoted to finds relating to human settlement in the canton of Faverges from the Neolithic period to the 18th century. The history covered there therefore extends well beyond the Gallo-Roman era.

Le trésor de Casuaria explores these sites through a virtual treasure hunt linked to the Thovey archaeological site and the Musée Archéologique de Viuz-Faverges. The Chemins du patrimoine urbain de Faverges offer another way to discover the town’s history. Their eight stops take you through the town’s historical and industrial heritage. You can explore the routes independently; allow around an hour and a half. This estimated duration makes the route a clearly defined way to explore the town’s heritage.

The Keep and the Church

The Donjon des Seigneurs de Faverges dates from the 13th century and stands on the former border between the counties of Savoy and Geneva. In 1991, it was added to the supplementary list of French historical monuments. A guided tour leads to a panoramic library offering 360-degree views over Faverges. Visitor facilities may change, so check the current tour arrangements in advance.

The Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste in Faverges-Seythenex also features notable historic architectural elements: its Romanesque choir dates from the 12th century, and its crypt was built over ancient remains. The keep and church thus offer distinct perspectives on the local heritage.

Connections to the Bauges and Collections

Faverges-Seythenex is located in the Parc Naturel Régional du massif des Bauges. The Muséum des Papillons offers a specific connection to the park’s wildlife: its collection spans three galleries and includes more than 5,000 butterflies and insects from five continents. A gallery on European fauna highlights day-flying butterflies of the Parc Naturel Régional du Massif des Bauges. The collection thus combines an international scope with a specifically regional theme.

Routes with Different Points of Focus

The Voie Verte du Lac d'Annecy is now 35 kilometres long and runs entirely along a dedicated path. It reaches Faverges, where it branches off from the Circuit de Tamié. The Au fil de l'eau mountain biking route starts at the Tisserands car park in Faverges and follows the waterways that feed Lake Annecy between Faverges and Doussard.

The Boucle aux Environs du Château hike starts in Faverges-Seythenex and offers views of the municipality’s historic centre. Another route is the Circuit de Tamié, from which the Voie Verte branches off in Faverges. Together with the eight stops on the urban heritage trail, these routes offer several independent ways to explore history and the area’s paths, without combining them into a fixed itinerary.

A Regional Cheese Connection

The Tamié Valley is also part of the region’s culinary landscape: it is home to an abbey where Trappist monks make a well-known cheese. This adds a local tradition to the cultural and landscape themes.
