Alby-Sur-Chéran can be explored through several distinct themes: the old town centre with its arcades and colourful houses, the history of leatherworking, the “Suivez la mouche” walking trail and the Chéran. There are several ways to enjoy a culture-focused stay: a museum displays objects from the craft trade, a church offers a contemporary perspective, and the walking trail is divided into twelve stops. You can choose what will shape your stay according to your interests and the time available.
Historic Centre and Craft Heritage
Arcades and colourful houses shape the appearance of the old town centre. The history of the Pont Vieux is also part of this historical setting: the bridge was destroyed during the Second World War and rebuilt true to the original. Its story adds a specific historical turning point to a walk around the town.
The Musée de la Cordonnerie is located in the medieval town centre. It presents Alby-Sur-Chéran’s leatherworking heritage through tools used in traditional craft production, various nails, wooden clogs and sewing machines. These objects were left behind by the last craftspeople. The museum opens seasonally; check the current opening hours before your visit.
Church and Art
Notre-Dame de Plaimpalais offers a different point of reference in time and art: the contemporary church was built in the 1950s. Its features include abstract stained-glass windows by Alfred Manessier. This places the town’s historic craft tradition alongside a post-war church building, without requiring you to plan the same kind of visit for both. Notre-Dame de Plaimpalais can be visited free of charge during the day; check when access is currently possible before your visit.
The “Suivez la mouche” Walking Trail
The “Suivez la mouche” walking trail can be followed all year round. It is about 2 km long and takes approximately one hour. Twelve stops and information panels in French and English provide the route with its structure. A free audio guide is also available on izi.TRAVEL in the same languages. You can choose between reading the panels and listening to an audio tour. The approximate duration and distance help you plan the trail as a standalone activity during your stay, rather than treating it as a longer hike.
The Chéran and Fishing
The river is also part of a stay in Alby-Sur-Chéran: the Chéran is a mountain stream and has held the “site rivières sauvages” designation since May 2019. Those interested in fishing will find a no-kill fishing stretch in the municipality, established in 1999. Before visiting to fish, check the current municipal notices, as temporary environmental restrictions may affect access to fishing.
Getting to the Vieux Bourg
You can reach the Vieux Bourg via the D1201 or the A41, exit no. 15 Rumilly/Alby-sur-Chéran. These two access options provide a practical starting point for planning a visit to the town centre and its cultural attractions.
