Venterol showcases its cultural history in various ways: the Chemin du Tomple is part of a marked cultural walking trail, the Château Ratier preserves a tower from a medieval castle, and the restored Temple de Venterol now serves as a cultural venue. A 19th-century wash house and the artworks in the Eglise Saint-Michel de Novézan also add their own distinctive touches. If you choose a destination for its historical themes, you’ll find paths, buildings and art here, rather than just one single focus.

Cultural walking trail and historic road

The Chemin du Tomple is part of the marked, eight-kilometre “Balade venterolaise” cultural walking trail. The eight kilometres refer to the cultural walking trail as a whole. The Chemin is a former royal road between Venterol and Vinsobres that has been reopened to the public. This path therefore brings together its present-day role in a cultural walk and its former role as a route for travel. Before setting off, check the local signage and conditions.

Tower, church art and architectural history

A square tower remains from the medieval Château Ratier castle. The Château was abandoned around the middle of the 15th century. The tower stands on a hill overlooking the old road to Nyons. The Château Ratier site is described as freely accessible; check local conditions before visiting.

The Eglise Saint-Michel de Novézan contains an Annunciation painting copied from a 15th-century Florentine fresco. Another depiction shows Saint Michael vanquishing the demon; this painting dates from 1644. The two works offer different points of reference for an art-historical appreciation: one through its source, the other through its specific date of creation. Visits to the church can be arranged through the mairie; confirm the arrangement before travelling.

The Temple de Venterol has been restored and redesigned as a cultural venue. Today, it is used for exhibitions and gatherings. If you are interested in an exhibition, check the programme before your trip.

The Venterol wash house also tells a story of architectural history through specific dates: it dates from 1876 and was renovated in 2006. It spans a canal fed by the Sauve river. Another local point of interest is the Vignoble de Provensol, which produces an AOC wine from the CĂ´tes du RhĂ´ne growing region.

Planning visits

The village of Venterol can be visited freely at any time of year, independently or in groups. Guided visits are a separate option: APAVEN regularly offers them for Venterol and Novézan; groups can arrange such visits on request. Confirm specific arrangements before your trip. Visits to the Eglise Saint-Michel de Novézan can be arranged through the mairie, while for the Temple, the current exhibition and event programme is the key consideration for your plans. This lets you choose between exploring independently, taking a guided tour and arranging a specific church visit, without confusing the different conditions for these options.
