Vertical limestone cliffs, a via ferrata and medieval monuments give Buis-les-Baronnies a variety of highlights to explore. The town lies in the heart of the Baronnies Provençales massif. For your itinerary, consider time outdoors, exploring the town and checking the date of a seasonal event.

Rock and Trails

The Via ferrata du Saint-Julien offers four routes. They are open all year, weather permitting. Check local weather conditions before setting out. Route configurations and safety requirements may change; checking the latest information before you start will help you plan your visit under the conditions in effect at the time.

As a distinctive feature of the landscape, the Saint-Julien rock rises above the valley, with vertical limestone cliffs reaching 100 meters high. Buis-les-Baronnies is also the starting point for numerous walks and hikes in the heart of the massif. Alongside the via ferrata, there are other options for days outdoors.

A specific walking route around the town has 24 stops over 2 km. This makes it a separate option from the many walks and hikes in the massif. Check the local signposting if you plan to follow the route.

Sightseeing and Events

The historical tour of Buis introduces visitors to legends, anecdotes, heritage and the town’s narrow streets, spanning a period from the Middle Ages to the last century. The tour is available seasonally. Check the dates before your trip if you would like to include this visit in your plans.

The Fête du Tilleul et des plantes aromatiques takes place every year in early July. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, confirm the dates for that year’s edition. The distinction for planning purposes is clear: the historical tour is available seasonally, while the festival takes place annually in early July.

Architecture and History

The portal of the former Chapelle des Ursulines is partially protected as a historic monument under a decree dated October 21, 1926. A gallery that is still visible today spans the street and connects the gallery with the convent buildings. The protected status and the gallery are separate features: the decree applies to the portal, while the gallery forms a connection above the street.

The semicircular Tour médiévale is part of the fortifications of Buis-les-Baronnies and dates from around the 13th century. It is open at its far end and has outward-facing loopholes. Its shape, position within the fortifications and loopholes identify the tower as an example of medieval defensive architecture.

The Tour du Safre has a different construction history: it was incorporated in the 14th century into a defensive wall dating from the late 12th century. The two dates therefore refer to different stages—the construction of the wall and the later incorporation of the tower.
