Location and landscape

Sainte-Croix is perched on a rocky spur between the Drôme and its tributary, La Sûre, at the entrance to the Quint Valley. From the village, enjoy views across the Drôme Valley and of the 3 Becs. The wider regional setting includes the Parc naturel régional du Vercors, founded in 1970. It brings together 85 municipalities, including Sainte-Croix, in joint projects.

Hiking and cycling

Several hikes lasting two to four hours start from Sainte-Croix. For a shorter outing, try the woodland trail at the Ancien Monastère, a 35- to 45-minute loop through a varied landscape of trees. You can choose between hikes lasting several hours and a significantly shorter circular walk.

The Ramiat route leads to the Ramiat ridge and offers panoramic views across the Diois. It can be reached via the D93 and then the D129 to Sainte-Croix; there is a car park at the entrance to the village. Sainte-Croix is also on the Sentier des Pas des Huguenots and the Routes de la Lavande. Several cycling and mountain-biking loops pass through or near the village.

Church and history

The Eglise-Temple of Sainte-Croix is part of a former abbey dating from the 11th century, around which the village developed. Since 1805, it has combined a Protestant nave with a Catholic choir and Catholic apses. Visits are free and can be arranged by contacting the Mairie in advance; check the current access arrangements beforehand.

The history of Mont Quint can also be traced through its tangible remains: three towers were built there in the 11th century and destroyed in 1581 during the Wars of Religion. Significant ruins remain today. Sainte-Croix also has vineyard huts, which were used to store tools, provide small shelters and keep pigeons.

Wine and seasonal themes

The Clairette and Muscat grape varieties are grown in Sainte-Croix and used together to make Clairette de Die. Domaine Achard-Vincent offers tastings and sells organic Clairette de Die and organic Crémant de Die. This offers two concrete ways to explore the local wine scene: the grape varieties grown here and the wines and tastings available at the Domaine.

Walnut groves, with their regular rows of trees, shape the landscape around Sainte-Croix. It comes especially alive during the autumn walnut harvest. The Festiwild at the Ancien Monastère explores another nature theme: this three-day festival returns to the site and focuses on the relationship between people and nature. Exact dates and the programme vary, so check the event dates before your trip.
