Saint-Martin-En-Vercors is part of the Parc naturel régional du Vercors. At an altitude of 750 m, Saint-Martin-En-Vercors is known as a green valley basin surrounded by forests. When choosing accommodation, the easy hike, local crafts and the history of metalworking offer different starting points. You can make landscapes, culture or a combination of the two the focus of your stay.
Forest Landscapes and Activities
The “Les charbonniers du Vercors” route starts in Saint-Martin-En-Vercors. An easy hike called “Le hameau de Tourtre” leads to hamlets in the valley and offers beautiful views of the surrounding area. This gives you two different ideas for planning your day: a place defined by its scenery, and a specific hike featuring valley hamlets and views.
Another option is the Via corda de St Julien-St Martin: a partly equipped vertical route along the Roche Rousse cliff face. It is open to mountain and climbing professionals from the municipalities of Saint-Julien and Saint-Martin. The easy hike and this route, which is expressly intended for professionals, therefore differ both in activity type and in target audience.
Traces of Past Work
Since the 16th century, iron ore has been turned into metal in the Hameau de Tourtre. The water power of the Adouin was also used there to run numerous industries, including mills and sawmills. In the Bois de l’Allier forest, charcoal burners produced charcoal for local metallurgy. Ore, water power and charcoal illustrate different foundations of the area’s industrial history.
A distinctive landmark in the village is the venerable “Sully” lime tree, which adorns the square in Saint-Martin-En-Vercors. Alongside traces of work, a single named tree and its location also form part of the village’s cultural character.
Crafts and Regional Products
L’Atelier de la Source makes cold-process care and antibacterial soaps, balms and maceration oils from natural ingredients and wild plants. A tourism description updated in July 2025 also mentions a free, 30-minute guided tour of the soap-making workshop for all audiences. If the tour is important to your plans, check in advance whether it is available on your preferred date.
A tourism description updated in December 2024 presents Ferme de Roche Rousse as a producer of Bleu du Vercors-Sassenage AOP, Saint Marcellin IGP and other dairy products. These include cooked pressed cheeses, fresh cheese, faisselles, yoghurt, milk jam and raw milk. Visitors can discover the dairy products directly at the farm; if you plan to visit, ask in advance about the visitor experience.
