Explore Rochechinard through its castle, museums and signposted trails. The town’s history spans everything from a medieval fortification to everyday objects from the 19th and early 20th centuries. When planning your visit, focus on culture at the museum and church, as well as outdoor activities on signposted trails. The church’s seasonal opening and the approximate duration of the hike can help you plan these activities around your stay.
Castle and local history
The ruins of the Château de Rochechinard stand on a rocky platform, which is now only partly visible due to increasing vegetation. The château’s main purpose was probably to defend the access routes to the Royans. A signposted circular trail leads to the ruins; however, the site itself cannot be visited today, as it is on private property.
The Maison Musée displays nearly 2,000 everyday objects from the 19th and early 20th centuries. It also serves as an arts centre, with an annual exhibition and numerous cultural events. In this way, it combines historic everyday objects with a cultural programme. The Musée du Royans – Vie et Traditions adds another perspective, housed in a former 18th-century rectory next to the ruins of the medieval castle.
The Church of Saint Georges offers another historical perspective. It was rebuilt in the 17th century after being destroyed during the Wars of Religion; its style is based on that of the original church from the early 15th century. From 1 May to 31 October, Saint Georges is open to the public daily during the day. Check these seasonal opening hours before your visit.
Walking and cycling
The signposted circular trail to the castle ruins starts and ends in Rochechinard. It is 3.83 km long, takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes, and includes a total ascent of 200 m. These details can help you factor the time and ascent into your plans.
The trail to the castle ruins is also part of the Grande Traversée du Vercors on foot. It passes via Roches Corbières at an altitude of 550 m and Les Cartelats at 595 m. The route therefore includes two named waypoints and their elevations.
There is also a specific mountain biking route: circular route no. 3 of the Base VTT-FFCT Royans-Vercors passes beneath the medieval castle ruins. Check trail conditions and signage before setting out.
Culture, meals and your stay
At the Ferme-Auberge La Cottinette, meals are prepared using seasonal produce from the farm. This adds a specific culinary dimension to the cultural and outdoor activities.
The options differ clearly when deciding how to plan your stay: the Maison Musée combines everyday objects with exhibitions and cultural events, while the church is open to visitors seasonally. If you want to spend time outdoors, you can plan around the signposted hike’s duration and elevation details, or consider the mountain biking circuit after checking trail conditions and signage.
