A stay in Mornans can be planned around three specific themes: hiking on Serre Antoine, art along the way and local history. The four-hour circular trail provides a clear time frame; the tower, stele and private site of Les Ariotes represent different historical contexts. This gives landscape and culture their own place in your travel plans.
Hiking on Serre Antoine
Mornans is a starting point for hikes, including the four-hour Serre Antoine circular trail. Its measurements make the time required clear: 13.33 kilometres in length and 500 metres of elevation gain. Plan the loop as a separate activity and check current trail conditions before setting off. This keeps the hiking portion clearly defined in your plans, rather than treating it as a brief stop along the way.
The car park for the Serre Antoine route is near Haut Célas, before the hamlet with Mornans town hall. This gives you a specific reference point for the start; before travelling there, check whether local works or restrictions affect access.
The pyramid-shaped Serre-Antoine mountain rises above Mornans and offers panoramic views over the Roubion Valley. The Tour de Mornans is also visible during a hike. It is the former keep of Mornans Castle and was built in the last quarter of the 13th century.
Approaching the Tour de Mornans is expressly prohibited because of the risk of collapse. Plan to view the tower as a historic landmark, not as a place to approach; check the local restriction before your visit.
Art along the way
Two names need to be distinguished when it comes to art. Muret d’Art is an artistic, ecological and international trail that follows the Serre Antoine hiking path. The Murets d’Art project was established in October 2019 on the local “Le tour de Serre Antoine” circular route, near the Bompard ruins, with three artistic installations. The first name refers to the trail, while the second refers to the project with its three installations.
Local history and memorial sites
East of Mornans stands a stele commemorating Isabeau Vincent, known as “the Shepherdess of Crest.” She was arrested in 1688 and subsequently imprisoned in the Tour de Crest and in a convent. It is also said of Vincent that one night she fell into a trance, prophesied and called on Protestants to resist.
Les Ariotes is a private historic site beneath a large oak tree. Preaching took place there during the period of clandestine worship. Its private status is as important for orientation as its history: Les Ariotes should not be mistaken for a freely accessible stretch of trail.
Farm visit and local products
GAEC Chez Amandine offers farm tours by reservation. Admission is €5 per adult. If you plan to take a tour, book in advance and confirm the admission price when doing so.
The farm produces dairy products ranging from faisselle to AOC-certified Picodon. This adds a specific connection to local produce to an itinerary that also includes hiking and local history. The farm visit requires advance booking.
