A rocky fort site, scenic heights and a variety of outdoor activities define Mévouillon. For your trip, you can choose from several highlights: the history of the fort, routes with summit or ridge panoramas, and climbing, paragliding and horse-riding activities. The practical conditions vary, particularly for the climbing approach and seasonal flying operations.
Fort, Rock and Historic Traces
The rocky promontory of the fort was continuously inhabited from prehistoric times until the 17th century and served as a natural fortress. The Fort de Mévouillon was razed in 1684. From the site of the former fortification, Montagne du Fort offers an exceptional panorama. The name “Notre Dame de Barbentane de Mévouillon” is another historic trace of the place: it is associated with a dependency of an abbot of Saint Ruf in 1613 and also appears in documents from 1653, 1669 and 1695.
Routes, Views and Climbing
The route to Montagne de Buc leads from Mévouillon to a 1,441 m summit with a 360-degree view. On the Les crêtes de Croc et Bouvrège route, the ridges offer views of the Fort plateau of Mévouillon and the valleys stretching from east to west. You can therefore choose between a panoramic view from the summit and a ridge-top perspective over the fort plateau and valleys. The “Le Fort” mountain-bike route starts in Mévouillon, passes through the hamlet of La Farette and returns to the starting point.
The Mévouillon (le Fort) climbing area is on a limestone wall 15 to 50 m high. It has 38 routes graded from 4c to 8b, with a total route length of 802 m. From Buis-les-Baronnies, take the D546 towards Séderon as far as Col de Mévouillon; the climbing area is 25 km from Buis-les-Baronnies. The approach from the car park takes 30 minutes. Allow for this approach as a separate time period starting from the car park.
Paragliding and Horse-Riding Activities
The École de parapente des Baronnies welcomes guests in Mévouillon every year from late April to early November for free-flight activities. Options include introductory tandem flights and courses for beginners and advanced pilots. If paragliding is a key reason for your trip, plan around this seasonal window and check specific dates in advance.
Les Écuries du Lou Blanc in Mévouillon offers horse rides, horse-riding treks, lessons and themed days. Young riders can take part in accompanied pony walks on a lead, educational rides and baby pony activities. The horse-riding options therefore include both rides and lessons, as well as pony activities specifically aimed at young riders.
When looking for a holiday rental in Mévouillon, you can start by deciding on the main focus of your trip. If you plan to visit the climbing area, allow time for the approach from the car park; if you are interested in paragliding, bear its seasonal window in mind. Then compare the stated location of your chosen accommodation with your daily plans.
