Saint-Roman offers a well-preserved medieval town centre, vineyard paths and activities on the river. In the old settlement, lanes and architectural history shape the townscape; there are also vineyard trails, cycling and hiking routes, and waterside activities.

The medieval town centre and its architectural history

The medieval part of Saint-Roman has been preserved. The historic town centre forms a compact, formerly fortified settlement, and visitors can stroll through its maze of lanes. The Mairie-Ecole was built around 1890 at the transition between the old and new settlements. Its location points to this change in the town’s history.

Art is another cultural point of interest: Elisabeth Brzeczkowski has a permanent exhibition in an atelier-exposition in Saint-Roman. Check the current exhibition status before visiting.

Vineyard paths, sound and cycling routes

The Chemin des Vignes leads to several small vineyard huts. The path through the vineyards features audio-documentary sound bubbles; the “Balade Sonore du Chemin des Vignes” starts in the town centre.

Cyclists can also include Saint-Roman on a named route: the “Die–Luc–Châtillon” circular cycling route passes through the town. Along the way, cyclists can stop at one of the village’s two wine cellars. Another route is the “Sur les pas des Huguenots, de Die aux Nonières” trail: its first section leads from the old village of Châtillon-en-Diois to Saint-Roman along a small, scenic balcony path above the Bès basin. Route conditions can change, so check them before setting off.

River landscape and waterside activities

Saint-Roman lies below the cliffs of the Vercors Regional Natural Park and is one of the 15 municipalities in the Diois covered by the park. At the confluence of the DrĂ´me and the Bez lies a Natura 2000 zone at risk of flooding; beavers also frequent the confluence. The beaver walk is an easy stroll along the riverbank.

The beaver walk is suitable for ages five and up. Availability and participation requirements may change; check them before planning your visit. For water activities, Canoë Castor Drôme in Saint-Roman rents out canoes and kayaks. The location is at 332 Route de Châtillon. Check the current location before travelling there. The options differ by mode of travel: on foot along the riverbank on the beaver walk, or on the water in a rented canoe or kayak. The age guidance of five and up applies to the walk.

Winegrowing in Saint-Roman

Local winegrowing includes Cave Manuel Pineau, a three-hectare organic vineyard in Saint-Roman. Clairette and Muscat grapes are grown there. Cave Manuel Pineau is located at 93 Chemin des Près in Saint-Roman.
