Épinouze brings together several clearly distinct themes to help you plan your trip: historic traces at the Commanderie de Lachal, art, a landscaped park and winegrowing. You can plan your stay around whether history, artistic techniques, a green space or local grape varieties are what appeal to you most.
History of the Commanderie de Lachal
The Commanderie de Lachal was originally built as a Romanesque chapel, surrounded by a cemetery and an original village. In the 13th century, the Dauphin gave the Commanderie to the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem. This sequence links a sacred origin with the Order's later history. A decree dated 29 December 1981 granted protected historic monument status to parts of the complex: the façades and roofs, the former chapel and the interior fireplaces. The property is privately owned. If you are considering a visit, check access arrangements in advance.
Art in the studio and around town
Atelier à Dorer offers an introduction to wood sculpture, gilding, marquetry, painted furniture, drawing, painting, engraving and pastels. It also offers an introductory course in wood sculpture. Visits are by appointment, so plan your studio visit accordingly. The different techniques give the art theme several facets: from working with wood to decorative finishes, drawing and painting.
The MARTINAND sculpture trail provides another connection to art. Chandonzet Arts et Loisirs is developing a cultural project intended to raise awareness of contemporary art among the general public. Épinouze is therefore home to a range of art forms: a studio offering varied techniques, a sculpture trail and an initiative focused on contemporary art.
Park, markets and winegrowing
Parc de Chandonzet is a landscaped park covering 2.5 hectares. It borders the Canal and has a children's playground. The park can therefore be included in your choice of travel interests as a green space in its own right; these three details also highlight specific features: its area, its connection to the Canal and the playground.
The 2026 Marchés gourmands programme includes a theme and activities at each event, as well as large games for children. The venue is Place du Centre village, 26210 Épinouze. If you are planning your travel dates around a market visit, check the event dates in advance.
Winegrowing takes centre stage at Domaine Lionel Brenier, where old, now-disappeared grape varieties are cultivated, including villard noir, Villard blanc, Chatus, Persan and chambourcin. The estate also holds the Vignobles et Découvertes label. These named varieties give winegrowing in Épinouze a distinctive profile and set it apart from the artistic offerings and the park.
Accommodation in the former railway station
Hall de Gare offers accommodation in Épinouze's fully renovated former railway station, which has been divided into three apartments. The stated opening period runs until 30 October 2026. If you are travelling later, check availability for your specific dates.
