Charpey’s character is revealed through its circular layout and surviving architectural features: the village developed around its original castle and was protected by massive fortification walls. Two churches display different historical features; there is also a panoramic view from the hill and a mapped area for orienteering. Together, these offer a perspective ranging from the shape of the village to individual buildings and the surrounding landscape.

Village Layout and Traces of Fortifications

Surviving traces of the fortifications include houses with mullioned windows and ruined towers. The circular shape describes the development of the village as a whole, while the windows and towers reveal individual architectural features. Viewed through a cultural and historical lens, Charpey’s settlement pattern and fortifications can thus be understood as interconnected aspects, rather than defining the village’s history by a single building.

Churches and Architectural History

The Romanesque church of Saint-Didier-de-Charpey has a 12th-century façade made of molasse and tuff. Its single portal has a double archivolt, meaning a twofold arched frame. This is a specific architectural detail on the façade. The church’s historical affiliations can also be placed in chronological context: in the 12th century, it was initially under the authority of the Benedictines of Lyon, and later became dependent on Léoncel.

The church of Saint-Nicolas offers a different perspective on local history. It stands above the village on the site of the former castle mound; its Alpine-style bell tower was rebuilt in the 19th century. In contrast to Saint-Didier, where the Romanesque façade and portal are defining features, here the focus is on the historic location and the rebuilt tower. The two churches therefore highlight different architectural and historical features.

Hilltop Views and Landscape

At the summit of Charpey hill, an orientation table offers panoramic views of the surrounding area. From the circular village, you can explore the surrounding landscape, with views of the Monts du Matin and their varied natural habitats. The hilltop viewpoint and exploration of the landscape offer different perspectives: one opens up views of the surroundings, while the other draws attention to their natural diversity.

Orienteering and Activities

The Espace Loisirs Orientation in Charpey is a purpose-built, mapped area for recreational orienteering, combined with the discovery of the local heritage. Unlike the orientation table, which offers panoramic views, the area brings orienteering and heritage together in a leisure activity. Check the terms of the offer before travelling.

The Golf Club de Valence Saint-Didier covers 50 hectares at the foot of the Vercors and has an 18-hole course. Regional specialities can be sampled in the clubhouse. This makes the golf course a way to enjoy a local culinary experience, too. Before your trip, check the golf facility’s operating details and the current availability of tastings.
