Chabeuil can be explored through different questions: How do a fortified gate and a church tell the story of architectural history? What do the trails and wetland reveal? And how do the market and Caillette shape local traditions? The answers range from individual architectural details to a two-hour circular route, offering several clearly distinct themes for your stay.

City Gate, Church and Local History

The Porte Monumentale has been listed as a historic monument since 1926. The fortified gate, built of molasse sandstone, stands on a Gallo-Roman foundation. It served military and symbolic functions and provided access to the main road. Its material, foundation and former purpose are all aspects of this structure.

Beneath the vault are the upside-down coats of arms of the Grimaldi family. Above them is the revolutionary motto “la Nation, la Loi,” adorned with a royal crown. The gate’s history therefore includes not only its architecture but also its family and political emblems.

Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste was consecrated on 19 March 1863 and has a rare Greek-cross floor plan. Its 19th-century Neo-Byzantine decoration includes polychrome wall paintings in the choir and adjoining chapels. In contrast to the fortified gate, the focus here is on the floor plan and colorful decoration: two different architectural perspectives within Chabeuil.

The Canal des Moulins also tells the story of the town’s historical development. It shaped Chabeuil’s urban layout and economic production, which included thread processing, paper-making and leatherworking. The canal’s history thus complements the town’s buildings with a look at work and manufacturing in the past.

Trails Through the Old Town and Nature

The “Balade découverte de Chabeuil” leads through the historic old town. Following the Véore, it brings the former medieval fortification walls to life and traces the route up to La Gontarde hill, where a feudal castle and a church stand. The route thus links the old town with the historic walls by the river and the hill with its buildings.

The family-friendly circular route “Le Tour de la Petite Raye” takes two hours and goes around Chabeuil. It starts in front of the tourist office at the designated trailhead. This gives you an idea of how long the route takes without implying a particular mode of travel.

The “Sentier des Deux Renards” focuses on the waterside landscape. The circular trail passes through the Véore’s riverside woodland, by a fishing pond and through the Bachassier wetland, designated as a sensitive natural area. The wetland is a recognized natural area with ponds and pools; it serves to protect ecological diversity, including fauna, flora and habitats. The route thus features different elements of the landscape, not just water.

A notable viewpoint overlooking the village and the Rhône Valley is on the northern part of the hill, near the “Notre Dame des Champs” statue. It is possible to reach the “Sentier des Deux Renards” from Valence by public transport; check suitable connections before setting out.

Market and Caillette

The weekly market takes place every Tuesday from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., from January 1 to December 31. If you’re planning a visit to the market, you can use these hours as a guide and check the information before your trip.

Chabeuil Caillette is a small pâté made from pork and finely chopped herbs such as chard or lettuce. It is cooked in the oven and eaten hot or cold. Its ingredients and preparation offer a way to describe this regional specialty, rather than treating it simply as a name on a menu.

Chabeuil also keeps the Caillette tradition alive with a large annual fair. It includes a ceremony and the welcoming of Caillette enthusiasts. The dish and the event represent two distinct aspects of local food culture: the preparation itself and a recurring community occasion.
