Gex brings together firefighting history, historic architecture, and active leisure options. The Musée Départemental des Sapeurs-Pompiers is a distinctive cultural attraction, while the Parcours historique leads to municipal sites and landmarks. Fountains and the former Saint-Pierre Church add to the picture of the town’s history. The La Poudrière leisure centre and the capercaillie in the municipal forest area offer further points of interest. When planning your trip, consider whether you are mainly looking for firefighting and town history or a broader mix.

Firefighting history and walking trail

The Musée Départemental des Sapeurs-Pompiers opened in June 1999. Across more than 6,500 m², it presents 200 years of firefighting history. Its broad historical scope and clearly defined subject give this visit a different focus from the walk through the town’s history. You can visit the museum independently or as part of a guided tour; if a particular format is important to you, check the latest visitor information in advance.

Alongside the museum, the marked Parcours historique de Gex offers a way to explore the town. It passes municipal sites and landmarks and includes around 30 information panels. Its 35 stops trace 700 years of history, from medieval town walls to market squares. It therefore provides a broader view of municipal sites and different periods than the museum, which focuses on firefighting history.

Fountains and architectural history

The fountains add specific architectural and heritage details to this view of the town’s history. Both basins of the Fontaine de l’Horloge are listed as historic monuments. The Fontaine des quatre Goulettes was designed and built in 1746 by the Geneva architect Jean-Louis Bovet; it too is listed as a historic monument. For the Fontaine de l’Horloge, the designation explicitly applies to both basins, while the year of construction and architect provide a more precise historical context for the Fontaine des quatre Goulettes.

The former Saint-Pierre Church is also part of the region’s architectural history. Its square choir with a flat end was typical of church reconstructions in the region in the 13th century; the original parish church probably dates back to the Middle Ages.

Leisure, nature, and travel

The Pôle de loisirs de La Poudrière leisure centre offers a distinctly different focus: it includes a skatepark, a multisport court, a pump track, a zip line, and two pétanque courts. The mix ranges from skateboarding and pump track activities to pétanque, providing an alternative to the cultural and historical sites. Capercaillie are also still present in the municipal forest area of Gex, adding a connection with nature to the architectural and cultural attractions.

Bus routes 60 and 61 run between Gex/L’Aiglette and Gare Cornavin station in Geneva. If you would like to combine your stay with a trip to Geneva, these routes offer a practical option. Check the current timetable before travelling, as routes and times may change.
