Ornex offers two distinctive sides to consider when planning a trip: the history of its churches and activities ranging from orienteering to hiking trails with views of Mont Blanc. There are also cultural events and a connection to the ski resorts of the Monts Jura. These different highlights can be considered separately when planning—from specific event dates to trail and excursion conditions.

Cultural history in Ornex

Ornex’s church was first mentioned in 1153 under the name “ecclesia de Ornacho.” The Church of Saint Brice contains 15th-century frescoes depicting Saint Brice and Saint Christopher carrying the Christ Child on his shoulder. The current square choir dates from the 13th century. The church’s bell tower was rebuilt in its present form between 1816 and 1818. Together, these details illustrate different periods in the local history of the church.

The Saint-Jean-Baptiste Chapel was founded in 1468 by Johanez Brochut d’Ornex, who was the parish priest of Gex. The chapel’s crypt is not accessible. Another architectural detail in Ornex is a doorway with a moulded arch made of molasse, leading to a presbytery dating from the early 16th century.

The medieval municipal building Chez Brice is located at 62 Rue de l’Eglise. Since September 2024, it has been home to the “Les échappées culturelles chez Brice” project. Each month, it hosts a cultural week featuring exhibitions, conferences, and workshops. If you would like to plan your stay around an event, check the dates in advance: the monthly programme and the specific event dates are separate details to consider when planning.

Outdoor activities

The orienteering course starts at a start sign in Parc des Hérissons on Rue de la Place d’Armes. Using a map, participants make their way to checkpoints; the activity is considered suitable for all age groups. The same park also has an outdoor course for mountain bikes, bicycles, and BMX, as well as a street workout module and football and basketball facilities.

Ornex’s City Stade offers a different range of sports facilities: football, table tennis, street workout, and basketball are freely accessible there. The activities differ in format: orienteering centres on a map and checkpoints, while the City Stade provides facilities for several sports.

The hiking trails in Ornex offer views of Mont Blanc. Trail conditions and access may vary, so check conditions before setting out. Signposting for pedestrians and cyclists is in place in Ornex, and a map is available. This guidance is a separate planning consideration from the conditions on individual trails.

Excursions and planning dates

Year-round Line A53 and shuttle buses provide transport to the ski resorts of the Monts Jura. If you are planning an excursion there, check the timetable and the resorts’ opening periods in advance. The activities follow different planning schedules: the cultural week takes place monthly, while an excursion to the ski resorts needs to take their opening periods into account.

In Ornex, you can therefore choose between specific cultural events, activities in town, and excursions to the ski resorts. For hikes, trail conditions and access are key; for cultural events, the specific date matters. These differences can help you choose what to focus on during your stay without having to combine the activities into a fixed itinerary.
