In Ambronay, architectural history and music provide a common thread for planning your trip. The abbey, Notre-Dame Church, a surviving town gate, the remains of a fortification and a museum offer different cultural highlights. A monthly market and activities by the water add further ways to tailor your stay to your interests.

Abbey, Church and Music

Ambronay Abbey was founded around the year 800 by Saint Barnard, a former officer of Charlemagne who became a monk. Notre-Dame Church, within the former abbey, contains architectural elements from the 13th and 15th centuries. Its founding story and later architectural elements therefore point to different periods. The Ambronay Festival has been running since 1980 and is dedicated to early and Baroque music. Its program includes concerts and performances featuring Baroque music, world music, improvised music and family music shows. If attending a concert is important to your trip, check the event dates before you travel.

Historic Traces and Museum

Fort Sarrazin consists of the remains of a fortified military structure. It was built on the orders of the Count of Savoy and destroyed in 1330. The name therefore refers to the remains of a structure, not a fully preserved fort. Porte de la Gargouille is the only surviving one of Ambronay’s three historic town gates. Together with the abbey and its church, it offers another perspective on the town’s architectural history. Ambronay is recognized as a “Site Patrimonial Remarquable.”

The Musée Mémoires d'Autrefois focuses on something different from the historic buildings: it displays 3,800 objects relating to the history of former professions and traditional craft skills. Those interested in the history of work and crafts will find a collection with a distinct theme here; the architecture and the museum collection therefore appeal to different interests.

Monthly Market and Activities by the Water

A monthly market is held in Ambronay on the first Sunday of every month. It focuses on short supply chains, local producers and artisans. This offers a different perspective on the town from its buildings and collections: here, the focus is on the vendors and their crafts. If the market is important to your travel dates, check the current calendar before your trip.

The en Rebattey body of water covers 20 hectares, including 14 hectares of water, and is a gathering place for anglers and walkers. Another water-based activity is canoeing on the River Ain at the Base de loisirs de Longeville. Five routes are offered there, measuring 7, 14, 18, 24 or 32 kilometers. The route lengths make it possible to choose a distance; operating details may vary seasonally. Walking and fishing at en Rebattey can be contrasted with canoeing on the Ain as different types of activity.

For planning, it helps to choose a focus first: abbey history and buildings, the music program, the museum or the monthly market each offer a different reason to visit. If you want to plan around a festival event or the market, check the relevant dates. For a trip involving the water, the activities and route lengths listed above also provide practical guidance.
