Visan combines views across a vast cultivated landscape with a history that can be read in its gates, houses and parish church. Vineyards shape both the scenery and some of the guided activities. This gives you several ways to plan a visit: take in the views and nature, explore historic buildings, or enjoy a seasonal walk with a wine tasting.

Views over hills, the plain and surrounding villages

From a viewpoint on the hill near Visan, you can see slopes lined with vineyards, a vast cultivated plain, more than ten surrounding villages and Mont Ventoux. The view takes in both the open plain and the hilly landscape. Visan lies in front of a natural amphitheatre of colourful hills; the landscape around the commune is also a varied mosaic of vineyards, olive groves, flowering broom and forests.

These features describe more than a single viewpoint: vineyards, wooded areas and hills form distinct parts of the landscape. Those who choose Visan for its surroundings will get a clear sense of how cultivated land and natural features come together in the local scenery. The viewpoint adds a sweeping vista over the surrounding villages and Mont Ventoux.

Gates and architectural history in the old town

The old town is home to grand private residences dating from the Renaissance through to the late 18th century. Two gates offer further glimpses into its historic character: the Porte du Puy-Barret is a monumental gate dating from 1320. The Porte Saint-Martin is one of the surviving monumental gates of the Dauphins’ fortifications. Together with the private residences, they illustrate different chapters in Visan’s architectural history.

The parish church of Saint-Pierre also marks a precisely dated period in this history. Extensive construction work took place there from 1498 to 1520, apparently without interruption. The HĂ´tel de Pellissier offers a different feature: it hosts exhibitions throughout the year. Check the current programme before your visit if an exhibition is important to your plans.

For a walking exploration of the village, there is the Circuit 17 route. It is a walking trail for exploring Visan. This is a way to focus on the village itself, while the viewpoint opens up views across the surrounding area.

Vineyards and seasonal activities

On Thursdays in summer, guided walks take you through the vineyards of Visan. Georges TRUC, an oenologist specialising in the terroirs of the Rhône Valley, accompanies the walks and provides commentary. They end in the salons of the Hôtel de Pélissier with a wine tasting accompanied by local winemakers. The activity combines a walk through the vineyards with expert commentary and a tasting. As it is seasonal, we recommend checking the latest dates and booking conditions in advance.

Another connection with wine is the production of CĂ´tes-du-RhĂ´ne-Villages wines under the Visan appellation by Domaine de la Bastide. Together, the walks and wine production show two distinct sides of the local connection with wine: a guided activity with a tasting on the one hand, and the production of wines from the appellation on the other. Visan can thus be understood not only through its vineyards, but also through the links between its landscape, local history and wine.
