Le Barroux combines garden art, cultural heritage and cultural activities, each with distinctly different visiting arrangements. When planning, both your interests and the type of visit matter: the château can be explored independently, the former oil mill only on a guided tour, and Les Lamas du Barroux requires advance reservations. The Écoute & Goûte Festival, held annually in mid-June, offers another date to plan around.

Garden Art and Château du Barroux

The Jardin du Mont Ventoux is a private estate in Le Barroux and has held the Jardin remarquable designation since 2023. The garden tour takes visitors past fountains and waterways. Its design includes selected works of art, areas of lavender or irises bordered by dry-stone walls, an orchard and a Zen garden. Water, art, planted areas and the two gardens offer a variety of features throughout the grounds. Visitors interested in landscaped garden spaces as well as the château will find a distinct focus here.

At Château du Barroux, visitors can explore the interiors and terraces independently. Historically, the château originated as a fortified keep that protected the plain from Saracen and Italian invasions. From the 12th to the 18th century, it was the seat of the seigneurie. Its defensive origins and long role as a seat of lordship are two distinct aspects of its history. Some parts of the château are classified as historic monuments, others are listed; the site also benefits from full protection.

Monastery and Former Oil Mill

The Monastère Sainte-Madeleine is a Benedictine monastery. It was founded in Bédoin in 1970 and moved to Le Barroux in 1980. Bédoin and Le Barroux thus mark two different stages in the monastery’s history: its place of foundation and its later location.

The Moulin à Huile du Barroux can also be understood through its construction and operating history: built in 1792, this oil mill of the Moulin à Chapelle type operated until 1853. A visible millstone and Chapelle-type presses are among its surviving features. The former mill has been listed as a historic monument since 19 July 2006 and can be visited only as part of a guided tour. If you plan to visit, make sure to arrange a guided tour rather than expecting to explore independently.

Festival and Visiting Arrangements

The Écoute & Goûte literary festival takes place every year in mid-June. Its programme includes meetings, discussion sessions, book signings, readings, workshops, exhibitions and performances. It is open to all audiences, including children, teenagers and adults. If your trip depends on the festival, check the specific event dates before making plans.

Visits to Les Lamas du Barroux are possible only with advance reservations; a visit to the weaving workshop is also offered as an activity. Spiritual stays or retreats at the Monastère Sainte-Madeleine are reserved exclusively for men. Check the current arrangements before travelling. This makes it easier to assess the different offerings according to their actual conditions: festival dates, required reservations, guided tours or the terms of a spiritual stay.
