La Bastide-Des-Jourdans lies on the southern slope of the Grand Luberon and on the edge of the Parc naturel régional du Luberon. The commune offers a range of points of interest for a stay: a chapel with a precisely dated history, medieval structures, a named geosite, and numerous trails for hiking, horseback riding and cycling. When planning your trip, you can therefore decide whether to focus more on architectural history or outdoor activities.

A chapel built in several phases

The Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Consolation was founded shortly before 1523 and consecrated on August 19, 1535. It was badly damaged between 1582 and 1620 and had been restored by 1653. The sequence of its founding, consecration, damage and restoration sets out the building’s history in several clearly datable stages. Architecturally, the chapel has a rectangular choir with a barrel vault and semicircular arch, and a single-nave hall with one bay and a rib vault. The different designs of these two areas make the layout of the space easy to understand.

Château, church and Beffroi

At the Château of La Bastide-Des-Jourdans, the base of the round tower and the north and west walls date from the 13th century. In 1388, the Château provided refuge for a third of the population because there was not enough room in the village. The Château is privately owned and not normally open to visitors; tours take place only rarely. This restriction is important when planning: the building’s historical significance does not mean it can usually be visited.

The Église Saint Pierre aux Liens was also built in the 13th century. In 1343, it was given a north side chapel and a bell gable with three arches. The village Beffroi was built later, between 1620 and 1632, to house the parish bells and the municipal clock. Together, these buildings illustrate different periods in the local history of construction: from medieval origins through the church’s expansions to the construction of the Beffroi.

A text from 1229 mentions La Bastide-Des-Jourdans for the first time. In it, Raimond-Bérenger V, Count of Provence, established a compulsory route for merchants travelling to Sisteron or the upper Durance Valley and back. The place name thus appears in the same passage as a regulated merchant route, adding a medieval connection to trade to the area’s building history.

Geosite and outdoor activities

Geosite 44 is named “Source sulfureuse et barrage” and is located in La Bastide-Des-Jourdans. The sulfurous spring is one of three boreholes drilled by EDF in 1952 to investigate the subsoil before construction of a dam. This technical history is part of what makes the named geosite distinctive.

The commune has numerous trails for hiking, horseback riding and cycling, offering activities on foot, on horseback and by bike. Oh My Deuche’s 2025-updated offer description includes a four-hour discovery tour through the vineyards in a 2CV. The four-hour duration is a specific block of time that you can factor into your plans; the format described combines the tour with a drive through the vineyards.
