Cucuron lies on the eastern slope of the Luberon, at the foot of the Mourre Nègre. Walks and hikes, historic buildings and markets offer different ways to shape your stay. As you plan, you can consider whether you would prefer to spend most of your time outdoors, discover local history or include a market visit during your travel dates.
Hikes, a pilgrimage route and valley views
Cucuron is an ideal starting point for walks and hikes in the Luberon massif. One specifically named route is the Cucuron–Vaugines pilgrimage route. It begins at the tourist office on Cours Pourrières in Cucuron and also ends in Cucuron. The Chapelle de l’Ermitage lies along the route. Check trail conditions and the latest access information before setting out.
The Chapelle de l’Ermitage lies on the foothills of the Luberon, can be reached on foot and offers unobstructed views across the valley. The “Cucuron en 1900” walk by Marc Deydier is another option for exploring on foot. By comparison, the pilgrimage route features a named starting point and the chapel along the way, while the walk takes the form of a village tour.
Buildings and local history
The Musée Marc Deydier is housed in the 17th-century Hôtel des Bouliers. The Donjon St Michel is the surviving truncated tower and was listed as a historic monument in 1921. Its upper room hosts temporary exhibitions. As the program may change, check what is currently on view before visiting.
The Chapelle de l’Ermitage also has historical significance: it was a pilgrimage sanctuary attached to the parish and is mentioned in some wills from 1292 onward. Notre-Dame-de-Beaulieu is dated to the 13th century and the first half of the 14th century. These different dates offer several points of reference for local history without reducing it to a single period.
Another garden highlight is the Pavillon de Galon, which has a French-style garden laid out in 2004. The basin, too, became a place to relax after being redesigned. The range of themes thus extends from architectural and religious history to gardens and landscape; there is no need to fit them all into a single visit.
Market days and planning your stay
Cucuron’s weekly market takes place on Tuesday mornings throughout the year. A local producers’ market is held on Thursdays from May to September, from 3:30 to 7:00 p.m. The schedules therefore differ both by weekday and by season: the weekly market is in the morning and runs year-round, while the producers’ market is on Thursday afternoons during the months specified. Check the latest market arrangements before your trip.
When choosing your travel dates, you can plan around these markets as well as hikes and cultural visits. If you would like to experience a market, schedule your stay around its day; if walks and hikes are more important, factor trail conditions into your plans. This also lets you choose your hotel in Cucuron based on the experiences that matter most to you, rather than assuming there is one fixed itinerary for every stay.
