In Tourves, cultural history and nature offer different ways to explore: the Musée des Gueules Rouges is dedicated to bauxite mining in the Var department, historic landmarks tell stories of different eras, and the Étang de Tourves wetland lies near the village. To plan your visit, you can choose between a museum visit, routes through the village and forest, and a designated circular hiking trail.

Mining history and historic landmarks

The Musée des Gueules Rouges traces the history of bauxite mining in the Var department through a playfully designed visitor experience. Interactive terminals explain the origins of bauxite and add another perspective to the tour: from the material itself to the region’s mining history. The exhibition also includes a reconstructed mining gallery, which visitors explore with a guide. Check the availability of guided visits and seasonal opening details before your visit.

Historic points of interest can also be found in the village itself. The Fontaine Place de l’Hôtel de Ville dates from 1799 and was listed as a Monument historique in 1926. By contrast, the bridge known as the Pont Romain on the Tourves side dates from the 15th century and has been listed as a Monument historique since 1937. Despite its name, its recorded date therefore places the bridge in the Middle Ages.

The ruins of the Château de Valbelle involve two different attributions: the ruins are attributed to Omer de Valbelle (1729–1778), while the monumental remains of the park are believed to be the work of Charles de Wailly. The cautious wording is important: the proposed architectural attribution applies to the park remains and is not a confirmed attribution.

Étang de Tourves: a wetland near the village

The Étang de Tourves lies near the village and consists of three small depressions that hold water year-round. The wetland also has ZNIEFF status—a Zone of Ecological, Faunistic and Floristic Interest. This means the site is not only a landscape area but is also recognised for its ecological importance.

A path leads from the car park to the banks of the Étang. If you plan a visit, check for any local restrictions in advance. This keeps specific access information in your plans without assuming unrestricted access in every situation.

Explore Tourves on foot

The “À la découverte du village” walk takes you through the village lanes and along forest paths to explore Tourves’ heritage. It connects the village with forest paths on a route whose stated aim is to explore local heritage. If you would like to get to know Tourves on foot, this is an option that explicitly focuses on the area’s historic heritage.

Another option is “Les Oratoires de Saint-Probace,” a 7.4-kilometre circular hiking route starting in Tourves. The two options have different emphases: the village walk runs through lanes and along forest paths, while the circular hike has a clearly stated distance. This makes it easier to choose whether you mainly want to explore the village’s heritage or include a measured circular route in your plans. Guided museum visits and access to the Étang have their own practical requirements; take these into account in addition to your choice of route.
