La Garde-Freinet lies in the heart of the Massif des Maures, surrounded by impressive, protected natural areas. The village is a starting point for numerous hikes, mountain biking routes and horse rides. Fort Freinet, museums and exhibition venues also offer opportunities to explore the area’s cultural history. You can tailor your stay to the landscapes, history or regional themes.

Hiking trails and landscapes

The shaded walk from La Garde-Freinet to the pilgrimage chapel of Notre-Dame de Miremer is 9.7 km long. Weather or forest closures may affect access to this route. The Le Moulin de l’Adrech trail offers a different focus: it leads to an old windmill, restored in 2024, on a ridge about 400 metres high. From there, the panorama stretches as far as the sea; here too, weather or forest closures may affect access.

The Les Hameaux du Sud route leads to the hamlets of Camp de la Suyère, Val d’Aubert and Les Sinières in the Massif des Maures. The route offers impressive views of the Gulf of Saint-Tropez and the Maures. The Hameau de la Mourre–Les Cabrettes trail also offers views of the Massif des Maures and the Plaine des Maures. Weather or forest closures may affect access to the Les Hameaux du Sud route.

The La Garde-Freinet–Saint-Clément route is a family-friendly walk through chestnut and cork oak woodland. In the Saint-Clément district, it also passes through vineyards, meadows and areas with fruit trees. The Sentier de la Garde-Freinet à Grimaud par les Vernades runs through a cork oak forest, known as a suberaie. For a different landscape, take the La Garde-Freinet–Le Pont Romain route: it crosses the Plaine des Maures, with vineyards, umbrella pines and distinctive slabs of pink sandstone.

Fort Freinet and cultural heritage

Fort Freinet is a fortified medieval settlement covering 4,000 m², occupied from the late 12th to the 16th century. The site stands on a 450-metre-high hill, is listed as a remarkable natural site and offers an exceptional panorama. An activity visiting Fort Freinet involves about 45 minutes of walking on a steep path. For the visits and beekeeping activities listed for 2026, check dates and booking conditions in advance.

A permanent exhibition area at the Conservatoire du Patrimoine du Freinet is devoted to the archaeological site of Fort Freinet. Other exhibitions cover chestnut growing, silkworm farming and cork harvesting. The Musée d’Histoire holds an ex-voto painting from the second or third quarter of the 18th century. It comes from the Chapelle Notre-Dame de Miremer and was listed as a protected object on 24 June 2003. The painting is held in the museum’s storage collection.

The Chapelle Saint-Jean, Saint-Antoine et Saint-Crépin was founded in 1622 and completed in early 1628. The Chapelle Saint-Jean serves as an exhibition space for the municipality. In 2002, the municipality bought it back for use as a public cultural space; opening conditions may vary. The La Garde-Freinet tourist office is located in the Chapelle Saint-Jean on the RD 558. The Archistoire route invites visitors to discover the village’s squares, buildings and historical figures. Check whether the app is available before using it.

La Baume des Maures also brings landscape and history together: the small cave lies in the Massif des Maures, where there are few caves. Remains of burials from the later prehistoric period have been found there. It is accessible on foot only; trail conditions may vary.

Bees and chestnuts

During the Les trésors de la ruche activity, you can enter a beehive wearing a beekeeper’s veil and learn more about the life of bees and honey production. The activity includes tasting different types of honey. Another route passes a restored 17th-century apiary and the remains of a watermill at Blanche. Weather or forest closures may affect access to this route.

The Fête de la Châtaigne is listed for 2026 on Sundays 18 and 25 October and 8 November. The chestnut market features chestnuts and products made from them, regional produce, roasted chestnuts and entertainment. Dates and the programme may change; check them before your visit.
