Saint-Véran combines traditional fustes made from stacked larch logs with a special focus on the sun and astronomy. It also offers hikes on trails for different ability levels, mountain biking, cycling trips to famous mountain passes, and the Molines/Saint-Véran ski area. The range of options spans village history and exhibitions as well as activities in the mountain landscape.

Timber Construction and Mining History

Traditional fustes are houses made from stacked larch logs and are typical of Alpine house construction. The “Plus Beaux Villages de France” label is associated with this traditional architecture and Saint-Véran’s spectacular natural landscape.

Le Soum – Musée Arts et Traditions is housed in a building whose walls have been home to the people, women and animals of this high-altitude mountain village since 1641. The museum can be explored independently; guided tours are also available for groups. Check the latest opening arrangements in advance.

The Grand circuit de la mine passes the Musée du Soum and the Four des Forannes. The Four des Forannes houses an exhibition about copper mining, offering another insight into the history of the area.

Sun and Astronomy

The Maison du Soleil et de l’Astronomie offers educational exhibitions on two levels, explanatory videos, interactive modules and immersive installations about the sun. A range of presentation formats are available, from exhibitions and videos to interactive and immersive experiences.

Visitors can also observe the sun directly and safely using special glasses and a solar telescope on the centre’s terrace. This option may depend on the programme and conditions; check the latest information about solar observation in advance.

Hiking Trails, Cycling Trips and Elevations

Saint-Véran is the first stage of the well-known Tour du Queyras (GR58) and also a starting point for hikes on trails of varying difficulty. This gives you both a named route to consider and trails with different levels of challenge to help with your planning.

Numerous mountain biking routes around Saint-Véran can be ridden on conventional bikes and e-bikes. The routes vary in difficulty, and conditions may change.

From Saint-Véran, cycling trips lead through the Queyras valleys and to the Col Agnel at 2,744 metres and the Col d’Izoard at 2,360 metres. Both passes are known from the Tour de France and the Giro d’Italia. Road access may vary by season; check conditions before riding over a pass.

Another option is the Molines/Saint-Véran ski area, which extends from an elevation of 1,750 to 2,800 metres.

Plan Around the Season and Your Interests

The Navette de Clausis connects Saint-Véran with the Blanche Valley and the Italian border. Services and timetables vary by season; check the schedule before travelling. Planning requirements vary depending on your plans: for the shuttle, check the seasonal timetable; for pass trips, check road access; and for solar observation, check the programme and current conditions.

When looking for a hotel, it helps to have a clear reason for your trip: will hiking and cycling be the main focus, or will architecture, copper mining and astronomy shape your stay? These different interests can help you plan your accommodation around your own daily activities.
