Le Glaizil offers several different ways to enjoy a stay: the ruins of Château de Lesdiguières and an exhibition introduce the castle’s history, hiking trails open up views of the surrounding area, and a climbing site adds to the outdoor activities on offer. If you’re looking for accommodation, you can first decide whether culture, outdoor activities or a mix of both will shape your stay. This lets you plan around your own interests without combining different activities into a fixed itinerary.

Castle History and Village Life

The ruins of Château de Lesdiguières were built in 1571 and 1575 and have been listed as a historic monument since 27 July 1978. The permanent exhibition about the château features 18 panels on the Constable, the castle and its construction. Local opening arrangements may change; check them before your visit. Today’s Church of Saint-Jacques-Saint-Ambroise replaces a 14th-century church that was destroyed by fire.

There are four washhouses in the main village of Le Glaizil, including the commune’s only covered washhouse. A walk along the water leads to 16 fountains and washhouses within the commune. These details refer to different areas: the main village in one case and the commune in the other.

The Fête du pain also offers a seasonal attraction: every July, the village’s young people light the communal bread oven. Event dates may vary; coordinate your plans with the festival dates if attending the festival is important to you.

Hiking Trails and Viewpoints

Le Glaizil is the starting point for numerous hiking trails. The options range from stony paths to walking trails for a variety of abilities. A hike through the Forêt du Sapet leads to the Chapeau de l’évêque, a small peak above the Drac Valley. From there, you can see the high peaks of the Valgaudemar. The Chapeau de l’évêque, also called the Pic du Glaizil, also offers panoramic views of the Champsaur and the entrance to the narrow Valgaudemar Valley.

Another option is the “From Claret to Aspres-les-Corps” stage: it passes through the hamlet of Pouillardenc and through Le Glaizil. Near the ruins of Château de Lesdiguières and the museum, it joins the D571. Accessibility and trail conditions may vary depending on the weather and seasonal damage. Check local conditions before setting out.

Climbing and Landscape

The Lesdiguières climbing site is part of the outdoor sports offering in Champsaur-Valgaudemar and has 17 routes, including two easy routes graded 5a. The site is managed, maintained and inspected; route details may change. Check access and equipment locally before planning a climbing trip.

A ZNIEFF description dated 12 June 2024 places Le Glaizil within the area “Northern Dévoluy: Féraud Mountain Massif.” Its landscape is characterized by limestone ridges, imposing rock faces, scree slopes and grassy hillsides. These distinctive landforms offer a different perspective on the surrounding area alongside its buildings and village history.
