A stay in La Bâtie-Vieille can focus on heritage, trails or the mountain landscape. Above the village stands a 12th-century watchtower; there is also a historic circular trail, a route associated with the Way of St James, and trails with panoramic views. To decide whether the place suits your travel plans, it helps to distinguish between these different highlights.

Watchtower and historic trails

The watchtower is a cylindrical, beaked keep with a curtain wall and a moat. It stands at an altitude of 1,000 metres. Its date and architecture give the structure a specific cultural and historical significance; its position above La Bâtie-Vieille links it to the village’s surroundings.

The Sentier historique (Historic Trail) loops around the Chapelle Saint Antoine in the hamlet of Grand Larra. Near the hamlet of Pré Bellot, an information board on the same trail describes the Via Cotta Per Alpem, an old Roman road that crossed the Alps. The chapel and the board highlight different things: one concerns a chapel in the hamlet, the other recalls a historic crossing of the Alps. Visitors interested in local history can therefore consider the structure and the historic route as two distinct themes along the trail.

The Sentier historique is also a very easy circular hike: the route is 6.7 kilometres long and takes two hours. Its circular layout, distance, difficulty rating and duration together provide a concrete basis for planning your time. Check the trail conditions before setting out.

Other trails and the landscape

The other trails each have their own focus. The Opération Saint Esprit route passes through the commune. Le Tour du Bois offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountain ranges. Near Les Guérins, a trail through the commune leads towards Santiago de Compostela. So, alongside the historic circular trail, there is both a pilgrimage route and a trail with a particular connection to the landscape. If views are your priority, Le Tour du Bois offers a different point of interest from the culturally significant Sentier historique.

The forest is another aspect of the landscape: about 40% of the area of La Bâtie-Vieille commune is covered by woodland. The forests protect against erosion and wind and contribute to the scenic quality of the commune. The woodland cover and panoramic views describe different sides of the area: one concerns the commune’s forested land, while the other concerns the views from the village, which is situated on a hill, towards the peaks of the Champsaur and Gapençais. Panoramic views extend all around, through 360°.

Planning your journey and stay

From Gap, the road runs via Rambaud and the D6 directly to La Bâtie-Vieille. Temporary roadworks or closures may affect the route, so check conditions before you travel.

If you are considering La Bâtie-Vieille as an overnight destination, first think about which focus you would like your stay to have: the 12th-century structure, the stops along the Sentier historique, the pilgrimage route near Les Guérins, or the views of the surrounding mountain ranges. These different interests offer a practical starting point for tailoring your travel plans to the character of the place.
