L'Argentière-La-Bessée can be explored through a range of themes: technical and industrial history, experiences on the Durance and alpine nature. In the town centre, the Circuit du patrimoine technique et industriel brings the town's technical and industrial heritage to life. The three-kilometre loop includes twelve exhibits and several information panels. These include a self-supporting conduit on the Durance—a technical structure that forms part of the tour.

Industrial history along trails and at landmarks

The Tour des Hermes also tells the story of the area's industrial history. The company of Gilbert Planche, which operated the aluminium plant in L’Argentière-la-Bessée, built the tower in 1922. It rang to tell factory workers the time and help them avoid arriving late. Another themed walk, the Sentier thématique du Pays des Ecrins, follows the traces of the town's industrial past in L’Argentière-la-Bessée. Information panels and a downloadable mobile audio guide complement the route; check in advance whether the digital offering is currently available.

Other landmarks lead to further chapters in the town's history. The Chapelle Saint-Jean is the last surviving architectural testament to the Order of the Knights Hospitaller of Saint John of Jerusalem in the Hautes-Alpes. Check local access arrangements before planning a visit. The Statue d’Edward Whymper depicts the mountaineer who climbed the Barre des Écrins in 1864 alongside several high-mountain guides. The statue was erected to mark the centenary of the Bureau des Guides des Écrins.

The Durance and routes through the town

The Voie verte connects the town centre with the Plan d'eau and runs along the Durance and through the Sablonnières business park. It is therefore different from a purely riverside route: along its course, the river landscape meets the business park. The Plan d'eau is used for waterside recreation, fishing and training in white-water sports such as canoeing and kayaking. Check current access and trail conditions before setting out.

This is distinct from the Stade d'eau vive de l'Argentière-La-Bessée (III). A 35-kilometre navigable stretch of the Durance starts there and runs as far as Embrun. River conditions remain variable. Those interested in white-water activities can therefore distinguish between the Plan d'eau, with its recreational and training uses, and the river stretch explicitly described as navigable.

Climbing routes and an underground tour

The Les Collets climbing crag has just under thirty routes; most are graded 4 and 5. The area is described as suitable for beginner climbers. The Via Ferrata de l’Horloge starts near the local climbing routes. For the return, there is either a descent secured with wire ropes or a path to the car park. Check current conditions before setting out.

Another experience takes you underground: the Mine d'argent du Fournel offers a one-hour guided tour through 600 metres of medieval tunnels and tunnels dating from the 19th century. The duration and length of the tunnels give this visit a clearly defined scope. The guided tour is thus a different format from trails where panels or a mobile audio guide present the area's industrial past.

Alpine nature in the surrounding area

Near L’Argentière-la-Bessée, the Réserve des chardons bleus can be reached via the GR 54. An educational trail there focuses on high-mountain habitats and the adaptations of alpine plants. In the upper Fournel valley, the nationally protected and Natura 2000-designated alpine eryngo, Eryngium alpinum, covers 40 hectares. The information on its protection status and area offers a different perspective on mountain nature from the town's industrial history.

These different highlights can help you decide what to focus on during a trip to L'Argentière-La-Bessée: industrial-history walks and landmarks, water activities, climbing or an educational trail through alpine habitats. These interests can guide your choice of hotel without dictating a fixed itinerary.
