Medieval Massoins sits on a rocky spur above the Var Valley. Visitors who want to combine hiking with local history will find several different points of interest: a hike with a stated one-way duration, easier trails around the village, the Church of Saint Martin and the historic site of La Casette. There are also two annual festivals, each with its own program.

Hiking: Trails and Routes Around Massoins

The hike to the Plateau du Lac starts in Massoins. The outward journey takes two hours; the destination is at an elevation of 1,204 meters, with an ascent of 800 meters. For planning purposes, it is important to note that the two-hour duration applies to the outward journey, not necessarily to the entire hike. Plan separately for the return trip. Elevation and ascent also describe different measurements. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

Easier hiking trails radiate out from Massoins and connect the village with neighboring villages. Unlike the single route to the plateau, these trails form a network in several directions. This lets you choose between a specifically named route with a stated one-way duration and elevation details, and easier connections around the village.

The GR 510 runs along the Ravin de l'Ubac, on the border between Massoins and Tournefort. The ravine and the municipal boundary locate this section geographically. Check current local conditions for this trail as well before including it in your plans.

La Casette and the Village's History

The remains of the former castle of Massoins are preserved at La Casette. A chapel of the Black Penitents also once stood there. The site also has a picnic area overlooking Massoins and the middle Var Valley. La Casette thus combines traces of history with a specific place to take a break; the two named views are the village and the middle Var Valley.

Another point of reference in the village's history is the surviving church of Massoins. Dedicated to Saint Martin, it was first mentioned in 1376. Together with the remains of the former castle and the former chapel at La Casette, it forms a picture of several named historic sites—without equating the different periods of their histories.

Landscape and Festivals Throughout the Year

Massoins is one of the municipalities listed in the continental Type 2 ZNIEFF “Forêt de Duina – Mont Fracha.”

The Notre Dame du Rosaire patronal festival takes place every year on the third weekend of August. The festival features a Mass, serenades for residents, dances and speeches. If you are planning a trip around this date, check the dates for the year in question.

The Festival d'Art Urbain de Massoins is also held every year and includes live painting, creative workshops and family activities. The fourth edition also featured a gourmet and arts-and-crafts market with numerous stalls. The two festivals therefore have different focuses: the patronal festival is held on a specific weekend in August, while the art festival combines live painting with workshops and activities.
