Gattiéres can be planned from two perspectives: the old village and its architectural history, or hikes with different time commitments. The heritage trail, with its twelve information boards, offers an introduction to local history and can be explored alone, with family, or in groups. Group visits are possible by reservation. For the trails, specific information on distance, duration, and difficulty helps you choose.
Local History Among Lanes and Buildings
The old village includes medieval lanes, covered passageways (pontis), flower-filled squares, a stone fountain, and two washhouses. The view thus extends from lanes and squares to fountains and washhouses: the old village reveals different aspects of its architectural history, not just individual buildings.
The Église Saint Nicolas is a Provençal Romanesque-Gothic building. It was first mentioned in 1278; its present form dates from the 14th and 15th centuries, and its bell tower dates from the 18th century. These dates describe different aspects of the church: its first mention, its present form, and the later-dated bell tower.
The Chapelle Notre-Dame-du-Var also brings together history and religious tradition. It was mentioned in 1247 and was formerly a rural priory dependent on the Monastery of Saint-Pons in Nice. Every year on September 8, the Feast of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, a procession and a Mass are held there; the specific program may vary. If you are planning a visit around this celebration, check the program in advance.
The fortified tower ruin, dating from the 11th to 12th centuries, stands on Place Grimaldi. It is the only surviving remnant of the Château Grimaldi, which dates from the 13th century. The tower and the château therefore date from different centuries.
Historic Routes and Pilgrimage Connections
An old Roman road runs partly through the territory of Gattiéres and starts at the Var ford near the Chapelle Notre-Dame-du-Var. The same road is also one of the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela. The local history of the road and its significance as a pilgrimage route thus sit side by side, and the route is not confined to Gattiéres alone.
Choose a Hike by Time and Difficulty
The shorter trails differ in both distance and duration. The Boucle du Puy is an easy 1 km loop that takes about 45 minutes. The Boucle des Fontaines is an easy 3 km walking route with a duration of about one hour. The comparison helps with planning your time: the two stated durations differ by only a quarter of an hour, even though the route lengths vary.
Au fil de l’eau et de l’histoire is listed as 3.3 km, easy, and about one hour and 30 minutes long. The trail leads to the former cultivated restanques (terraced fields), where villagers worked until the 1960s. This tour therefore combines a specific time commitment with a glimpse of the area’s former agricultural work.
The hike to Baou de la Gaude takes more time: it is 8 km long, described as a moderate out-and-back route, and takes about five hours. In return for this longer time commitment, it offers views across the entire Var Valley and over the village of Gattiéres. The panorama stretches from the floor of the Var Valley in the northeast to Cap d’Antibes in the southwest. Compared with trails taking less than an hour and a half, this is a significantly longer hiking option. As trail conditions can change, it is worth checking the current route before setting out.
