The Chapelle des PĂ©nitents blancs de La Tour was classified as a historic monument by decree on 18 April 1944. Its frescoes have been protected as movable cultural property since 1908. The oldest part of the building contains an exceptional series of frescoes dating from the late 15th century. The cycle includes the Last Judgment, the Virtues and Vices, and scenes from the Passion of Christ. The two protection dates refer to different things: the classification of the building on the one hand, and the protection of the frescoes as movable cultural property on the other. Together, the Last Judgment, moral contrasts and the Passion form the themes of this fresco cycle.
The Chapelle Saint-Jean-Baptiste adds a different period to the history of religious architecture. Its main construction phase dates from the 14th century; it was classified as a historic monument on 14 September 1943. The chapel is in the La Vignasse district and can be reached on foot via the GR 510 hiking trail. Check local trail conditions before setting off. The church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption-et-Saint-Martin also houses artworks relating to the Rosary: an altarpiece in the Rosary chapel and a painting on the Rosary. The History of the Mills in the BĂ©al Artisan District
Former oil and grain mills dating from the 18th century remain in the Béal artisan district. The municipal oil mill “lou defissi”, a hydraulic mill, is also located there. Water enters from above and turns a metal wheel fitted with paddles, called the “roda”. The description of the wheel illustrates how a hydraulic mill works: the force of the water drives the paddles. Since 1992, the oil mill has been classified as a “machine à extraire des fluides” among the Monuments historiques. Béal is therefore home to both surviving 18th-century mills and a classified municipal oil mill, distinct aspects of the local milling history.
Hiking Trails, Landscapes and an April Event
La Tour-sur-Tinée lies on a ridge above the valley. The landscape around the village combines wooded peaks, gentle hills and sweeping views across the surrounding terrain.
