South of Castagniers, terraces planted with olive trees shape the landscape, while Saint-Michel Church is one of the notable buildings in the main village. The historic grounds of Notre-Dame de la Paix Abbey, the offerings at Moulin de Castagniers and a walking route that can also start here offer different themes to explore. You can focus on culture, olive products or scenery according to your interests; visiting arrangements vary.
Church and abbey: historical points of interest
Saint-Michel Church is one of the notable buildings in the main village of Castagniers. Saint-Michel Chapel was made a parish church on 22 August 1802. Notre-Dame de la Paix Abbey also offers a historical point of reference: the community moved there on 8 October 1930. These two dates mark different events—the chapel’s elevation to parish church and the community’s move.
The historic grounds of the abbey include an avenue of cypress trees, an olive grove and an orchard. Notre-Dame de la Paix offers guided group visits on request. This means visits are arranged as group tours on request—a practical difference from a self-guided visit that you can plan independently. To get there from Castagniers, take the D614, then turn onto the D14, the Route de Saint-Blaise. The turn-off is 1.7 km from the village centre.
Olive-growing landscape and products
The terraces planted with olive trees in the south give the landscape a distinctive character. Croix du Cuore is a landmark on the horizon associated with Castagniers. These two features serve different purposes: the terraces describe a cultivated landscape, while Croix du Cuore is a prominent point of reference on the horizon. You can therefore explore the area through both its cultural landscape and a named landmark.
By appointment, Moulin de Castagniers offers visits to the orchard, the museum with video and the mill. Tastings and on-site sales are also available by appointment. The producer makes olives from Nice, olive paste and olive oil with an AOP designation. At the mill, you can combine a look at the different visiting stops with specific products to taste or buy on site—provided you arrange your visit in advance.
The abbey and the mill offer different visiting arrangements: Notre-Dame de la Paix provides guided group visits on request, while visits, tastings and sales at the mill are available by appointment. When choosing between these stops, you can therefore base your decision on the type of visit you prefer: a group tour, or several points of interest—an orchard, museum and mill—with tastings and sales.
Plan your walk and access
The Tour du mont Cima walking route can also start in Castagniers. This makes the village a possible starting point for the route, alongside its cultural and product-related attractions. There is also an important access restriction to keep in mind when planning: Vallon Obscur du Donaréo is closed to the public until further notice because of the risk of falling rocks. Take this closure into account and check access conditions before planning a visit.
