A medieval village on a rocky spur, a château above the Var Valley and several hikes with clearly specified routes and walking times: Carros brings culture and scenery together in a small geographical area, though not all the trails offer the same experience. The village overlooks the valley, and the Château de Carros stands at the highest point of the village. Visitors planning a stay can choose between local history, festival traditions and a range of hikes.

Carros is one of the 47 municipalities in the Préalpes d’Azur Regional Nature Park. The park is characterised by great biological and landscape diversity between the sea and the mountains. The village itself has retained its medieval appearance. Despite being destroyed several times, the 12th-century château has preserved its medieval form. After the municipality acquired it, the château was renovated; since 1998, it has housed the Centre International d’Art Contemporain (CIAC). Together, the village, château and valley give Carros a distinct historical and scenic setting.

Choose a hike by distance and time

The Les Plans de Carros et le village route follows a shaded path to the medieval village and its orientation table. It is 7 kilometres long, with 400 metres of ascent, and is described as a moderately difficult hike taking 3 hours. The distance is not the only useful factor when deciding: the ascent and duration help distinguish this hike from the walks described as easy.

An easy walk at the Chapelle Saint-Sébastien follows a corniche above the Var Plain. The route is 5.5 kilometres long, with 420 metres of ascent, and takes 2 hours 30 minutes. Les Balcons de Carros is also described as an easy hike: 4.8 kilometres, with 350 metres of ascent and descent, and likewise takes 2 hours 30 minutes. Its destination is the Canal de la Gravière, with views over the Var Plain and the Mercantour Massif. Check the route’s status before setting out.

The walk to the Pont de la Lune is described as easy and is listed as 2.5 kilometres long, taking 2 hours. The bridge was restored in 2016 and 2018 and lies upstream from the remains of the old Gabeyrée oil mill. Compared with the other hikes described, it is notable that the shortest route does not have the shortest stated duration: distance alone therefore does not tell you which walk is the best fit for your available time. Taken together, ascent, duration and difficulty provide a better basis for choosing between the trails.

Festivals and culture in the village

The events calendar also brings together different aspects of local history and life. Sainte-Colombe is celebrated in the village every year in late August; the tradition dates back to 1715. The programme includes processions, boules competitions, children’s games and an evening dance. The Fête des fraises is also held annually, animating Place Louis Frescolini in Les Plans de Carros for an entire weekend. Local craftspeople and traders, as well as regional products, are part of the festival. Anyone wishing to plan a trip around either event should check the dates for their chosen year.
