Thorame-Haute combines mid-mountain landscapes with high-mountain terrain rising above 2,000 metres. The municipality encompasses a range of natural habitats for fauna and flora. A pastoral landscape between the Issole and Verdon valleys, the area is shaped by farmland and herds. Visitors planning a stay here can focus on nature or cultural experiences.

The “Les hautes vallées” cycling route is signposted near Thorame-Haute. It is 72 kilometres long, includes 1,062 metres of elevation gain and has a stated duration of four hours. Its route runs at the foot of the Cheval-Blanc massif and the mountain of Coupe. The distance, elevation gain and time provide practical guidance for planning your trip.

The Tour du Courradour hike starts in the hamlet of Peyresq in the municipality of Thorame-Haute. It offers views of mountain forests, high-mountain pastures and open landscapes overlooking the surrounding peaks. Check local trail conditions before setting out. For a more peaceful nature outing, Lac des Sagnes is ideal for a family picnic and fishing.

Churches, a Bridge and Historic Hamlets

The village parish church of Saint-Georges was destroyed in 1574 during the Wars of Religion and rebuilt between 1598 and 1603. The Pont du Moulin is a 17th-century bridge. Along with 17 other French monuments, it was selected for priority support through the French heritage lottery. Notre-Dame du Serret is considered the oldest known religious building in the municipality. It dates from the 13th century, or possibly an even earlier period. The site is accessible on foot and offers exceptional views of the Alpine landscapes of Provence.

The chapel of Notre-Dame-de-la-Fleur in Thorame-Gare, a settlement within the municipality, is also a destination for exploring cultural and religious history: it is a pilgrimage site. On Whit Monday, a procession goes from the parish church of Thorame-Haute to the sanctuary of Notre-Dame de la Fleur, followed by religious ceremonies.

The rebuilt hamlet of Peyresq is part of the municipality of Thorame-Haute. Its preserved architecture reflects its medieval, military and religious history. The church of Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption has its roots in the 11th century and is built in the Alpine Romanesque style. The reconstruction work in Peyresq received the Europa Nostra Award in 1980 and a second prize in the Chefs-d’œuvre en péril awards. In Ondres, the church of Saint-Laurent was rebuilt in 1868. The centre of the hamlet is also home to a historic stone spring and washhouse. The former communal still is a surviving relic of local lavender distillation and the history of so-called “blue gold.”

Plan for the Season and Your Journey

La Colle Saint Michel has a cross-country ski centre, with a ski area between 1,430 and 1,800 metres above sea level. It operates seasonally, so check in advance whether it will be open during your travel dates. This allows you to plan cross-country skiing as a seasonal activity rather than assume it is available year-round alongside other attractions.

Thorame-Haute railway station is on the line between Nice and Digne-les-Bains. It opened in 1911, when the entire line began operating. The Train des Pignes reaches Thorame-Haute after Annot and then continues towards Saint-André-les-Alpes, by Lac de Castillon. Check the timetable before planning your journey around the train. Access to the hamlet of Ondres is different: it can only be reached via an unpaved track, which begins below the hamlet at the Verdon.

When looking for a holiday rental, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on: will your trip centre mainly on historic sites and hamlets, or are hiking, cycling or seasonal cross-country skiing your priority?
