At Point Sublime, the view opens onto the entrance to the Grand Canyon; at the same time, hiking trails and cultural details reveal very different sides of Rougon. For planning, it is worth distinguishing the routes by their specific features: the Sentier Blanc-Martel is a 15-kilometre one-way hike, while the cultural heritage trail takes about an hour. There are also paths through the commune, opportunities to watch vultures, and remarkable architectural features in the medieval quarter.

Hiking Trails and Vulture Watching

The Sentier Blanc-Martel runs between the Chalet de la Maline in La Palud-sur-Verdon and Point Sublime in Rougon. It follows the course of the Verdon and includes sections with staircases and tunnels. The GR®4 crosses the commune along this trail. Since the start and finish are in different places, its one-way format matters when planning your day. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

The GR®49 also crosses Rougon, passing over the Pont du Tusset; it ends at Point Sublime. This viewpoint is therefore the endpoint of both routes, while their other named features differ: for the Blanc-Martel, the focus is on its 15 kilometres and the route between the Chalet de la Maline and Point Sublime; for the GR®49, it is the route over the Pont du Tusset.

Another option is the Sentier des vautours. It starts at the Carajuan campsite and offers the chance to observe griffon vultures and other birds of prey in their natural habitat. The vulture-watching point is near the viewpoint at the Mur d’Abeilles, opposite the vultures’ acclimatisation cage. Carajuan and Mur d’Abeilles thus provide different reference points: the trailhead and the location of the observation point.

Point Sublime and the Gorges du Verdon

Point Sublime lies on the right bank of the Gorges du Verdon, below the village of Rougon. From the viewpoint, you can see the entrance to the Grand Canyon, whose appearance is shaped by the narrow Couloir Samson. Below, the Verdon appears greenish; opposite are the Paroi du Duc and the Falaises de l’Escalès. The two rock faces face one another and reach almost 400 metres in height. The river, gorge entrance and rock faces offer distinct reference points for looking into the gorge.

From the car park at Point Sublime, a short walk of about ten minutes leads to the viewpoint. As parking arrangements may change seasonally, check the parking situation before travelling there.

For climbers, Rougon serves as a base for exploring the Gorges du Verdon. Most climbing areas on the right bank of the gorge are no more than ten minutes away. Climbing areas on the right bank of the gorge should be distinguished from the hiking trails through the commune.

Heritage in the Village

The cultural heritage trail takes about an hour. It starts at a car park, leads through the village lanes and ends on the opposite side. This makes it possible to plan a route through the village differently from the Blanc-Martel’s 15-kilometre one-way hike: the heritage trail combines its approximate duration with a route through the village streets.

Much of Rougon’s medieval quarter is now in ruins, but it retains remarkable architectural features. These include round-arched door surrounds and rounded bossage stones at the corners of buildings. The door surrounds show the arch shape above the entrances; the bossage stones are distinctive corner stones. These architectural features probably come from the former castle.

The washhouse also offers a specific architectural detail: the year 1886 is engraved on its south side. This probably marks the completion of the construction work. Together with the forms found in the medieval quarter, this date offers another perspective on Rougon alongside its trails and viewpoints.
