Roumoules was originally built on a well-oriented hillside between the Peyrouvier Gorge and the Colostre River. This setting gives the village a tangible landscape context. At the same time, fountains, the church, the cross and the Christmas nativity scene lead through different chapters of its history. Visitors planning a stay can therefore consider the landscape, village history and a mountain bike route through the village as distinct points of interest.

Hillside Location, Grain and Lavandin

About two thirds of Roumoules’ area is cultivated, mainly for grain and lavandin. The remainder consists of wooded land or heathland. Two different scales should be distinguished: the hillside describes the village’s original location, while the land-use proportions refer to the municipality. In this way, agricultural land is set against areas of woodland and heathland. Together, these details convey a sense of the location and how the land is used, without reducing Roumoules to just one type of landscape.

Mountain Bike Route and Road Connections

The “Les Cabanons du plateau à VTT” mountain bike route passes through Roumoules along Rue Grande. The village is therefore one section of this named route. The D952 departmental road is a separate point of reference for road access: it connects Roumoules with Riez and Moustiers-Sainte-Marie and provides access towards the Verdon Gorges and Lac de Sainte-Croix. The route and road therefore serve different planning needs: cycling through the village and road connections to the named destinations. If you plan to travel on the D952, check the road conditions in advance.

Fountains and the Historic Water Supply

The Fontaine de la République is a wall fountain featuring a bust of Marianne and was inaugurated in 1895. Its original water supply included a Gallo-Roman stone conduit that carried spring water to the former château. The fountain thus brings together a specific date in the structure’s history and an older story of water supply. The conduit and château are part of the historical context; the fountain’s inauguration dates to 1895.

Church, Cross and Traditional Interpretation

The church of Roumoules is dedicated to Saint Peter in Chains. It was probably originally a monastery chapel or a former priory dependent on Lérins Abbey. This possible origin remains a cautious historical interpretation.

La Croix was erected in 1874 on Villeneuve’s former threshing floor, within sight of the church and beside the communal path to Saint Martin and Les Saintes Maries. It is thought that the cross may have been the starting point for processions to bless the harvest or pray for rain. The date and traditional interpretation offer two different points of reference: a documented year of construction and an explicitly tentative explanation of the cross’s role.

The Christmas Nativity Scene

Every year around Christmas, the Roumoules nativity scene is displayed in the church. Its figures are made of porcelain, stand between 40 and 75 centimetres tall and wear regional dress. The material, size and clothing give the nativity scene specific characteristics, while the display itself is seasonal. If you would like to see the nativity scene, plan your visit for the Christmas period and check the specific display dates in advance.

Choosing Roumoules as Your Base

When looking for a hotel in Roumoules, you can first consider what matters most to your plans: the village’s points of interest or the road connections towards Riez, Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, the Verdon Gorges and Lac de Sainte-Croix. The D952 provides a specific road connection for this. The mountain bike route, meanwhile, passes through Roumoules along Rue Grande. These different points of interest can help you choose a base that fits your travel plans.
