Peyruis lies on the right bank of the Durance, at the foot of densely wooded hills. The town combines historic traces in its old town with trails through olive groves, fields and wooded terrain. If you are looking for a hotel in Peyruis, you can plan your trip around whether you mainly want to explore local history or set aside time for a hike.

Old Town, Fountains and Castle Remains

A monumental keep, converted into a dovecote, has survived from the former castle, along with remnants of towers and fortification walls. These form terraced gardens known as the “Banquets.” From the castle site, you can look out over the surrounding hills, the old town and the plain, as well as orchards and cultivated land in the Durance Valley. The castle remains and the views are two different aspects of the same place: the surviving structures on one hand, and the landscape views on the other.

The winding streets of the old town have their own theme, too: they are lined with eight fountains, including the Parlatan Fountain, rebuilt in 1815. Created in 2022, “La Balade des Fontaines” takes visitors to the eight fountains and introduces the history of Peyruis. A medieval gateway known as the “Juiverie” recalls a Jewish merchant community from the 13th and 14th centuries. The fountains, gateway and castle remains thus offer distinct, tangible points of connection with the town’s history.

Churches and Cultural Sites

The parish church of Saint-Nicolas combines 15th-century Gothic elements with brightly coloured stained-glass windows dating from the 16th to the 19th centuries. Its furnishings also include numerous paintings and reliquary busts of Saint Roch and Saint Nicholas. The wall paintings are representative of the 20th century. The different periods can be seen side by side here—in the architecture, the windows and the other furnishings.

The Chapelle Saint-Roch dates from 1720–1721. It is used for cultural events such as art exhibitions and music performances, and is mainly open on weekends; restoration work is ongoing. If you are planning a visit, check opening arrangements in advance.

Hiking Among Olive Groves and the Durance Valley

The signposted Tour de Praconteau starts beside the town hall, first passing through the old town and then through olive groves towards Collet de Piozin. It also crosses the wooded Massif de Peyruis, which is recognised as a ZNIEFF site—a “Zone naturelle d’intérêt écologique, faunistique et floristique.” The circular hike is rated difficult: it covers 14 kilometres and 500 metres of elevation gain, and takes five hours. These details make it possible to plan the route as a substantial hike, rather than a short walk.

The Tour des Iscles focuses on a different landscape. It passes through olive groves and fields, and the rocky outcrop of Peyruis village offers views over the Durance Valley. In Champ de Gau, terraced areas with stone retaining walls and numerous local springs invite visitors to stroll. The Tour des Iscles and the walk in Champ de Gau each have their own character, while Praconteau is described in more detail in terms of length, elevation gain and stated difficulty.

Mountain bikers also have a named circular route: “Autour de Tourdeaux” begins at the ruins of Peyruis Castle and follows a long route to the Chapelle d’Augès, then on to the Jas de Sigalette. Check trail conditions before setting out. This makes it easy to distinguish the routes by their actual focus: a challenging hike with a stated duration, trails described in terms of their scenery, or a mountain-bike loop with a series of named stops.

Local Produce

Peyruis promotes local produce such as fruit, olive oil and nougat. This adds a culinary dimension to the town’s cultural and landscape offerings without limiting a stay to just one type of outing. When planning your trip, you can combine the fountains, churches and castle remains with time outdoors; which hike is suitable depends on whether you have a five-hour circular route, a walk or a mountain-bike loop in mind.
