Le Fugeret is a rural mountain commune in the Vaïre Valley, with a central village, hamlets, forests, and alpine landscapes. Religious and rural heritage can be found in the village, the hamlets, and along the trails. This combination gives your trip a distinctive focus: you can explore local buildings and traces of rural life, as well as the landscape unfolding between the valley and the ridges.

Valley, forests, and ridges

The landscape of Le Fugeret includes the Vaïre Valley, wooded slopes, ridges, trails, and streams. The trails link the village and hamlets with the valleys and ridges and offer views of the surrounding landscapes. For those interested in hiking, these provide a range of landscape features to look out for: wooded sections, open high ground, and valley areas all contribute to the commune’s character. The trails also offer a way to understand the village and hamlets as part of the wider rural mountain landscape.

Heritage in the village and along the way

The local heritage includes religious buildings, oratories, paths and lanes, as well as ovens, walls, and fountains. Traces of rural life can also be found here. Rather than focusing on a single building, you can also discover the cultural heritage in the paths and everyday features of the area. The Chapelle Saint-Pierre links this cultural focus with a striking landscape: it lies about two kilometres east of Le Fugeret on a large sandstone chaos that forms a natural labyrinth of the lapiaz type. A path circles the chapel and the adjoining hermitage.

The history of the Chapelle Saint-Pierre is also linked to a religious tradition passed down over time. In 1788, Achard described an old parish procession that went from Le Fugeret to the chapel on 29 June, Saint Peter’s Day. This account provides a historical connection to the feast day and the route between the village and the chapel; it does not mean that the procession takes place again today.

Two hikes with different profiles

The Clot Bernard – La Rate route is a challenging 10.5-kilometre circular hike, with an indicated duration of about four hours and 30 minutes. It starts at Place de la Mairie. Along the way, it passes through a chestnut grove and, in places, between sandstone blocks; the return leg descends steeply through an area of black locust trees to Le Fugeret. The distance, difficulty rating, and duration provide a specific guide for planning. Since route details may change with trail conditions, it is advisable to check the latest information before setting out.

The Sentier du Fugeret à Méailles offers a different option. It also starts at Place de la Mairie: from there, the route follows Grand Rue toward Méailles and out of Le Fugeret. After 400 metres, it joins the hiking trail. The rest of the route passes through woodland and above the valley and the Chemins de fer de Provence railway line. No duration or difficulty rating is given here for this route, so its profile can best be understood from the route description and surrounding landscape.

The two routes address different planning considerations: for Clot Bernard – La Rate, the circular route, distance, difficulty rating, and approximate duration are specified. For the Sentier du Fugeret à Méailles, the focus is instead on the starting point, direction, and landscape along the way. You can therefore decide based on whether your plans call for a challenging circular hike with stated figures or a route described by its course.

Railway and village setting

The Chemins de fer de Provence railway line is also a feature of the landscape around Le Fugeret. At the level of the village, it follows an S-shaped curve to gain altitude, so the same village can be seen twice. The station and the Train des Pignes line contribute to the village’s history, accessibility, and identity. Together with the path that runs above the valley and railway line, this railway landscape reveals another aspect of the village setting without needing to identify it with a particular hiking trail.
